So in this thread I'm going to show you a photo and some instructions. The photo may make you think "w.t.f.?" and that's what you want. It's your brain shutting off. You have to find a way to turn it back on again and write within the 5 minutes. The best way to clear your mind when that happens is to drink a glass of cold water.
1. Start the timer. 2. Look at the photo. 3. Write.
Spelling and punctuation doesn't count. soifyouwantoyoucanjuxstkeeptypingwhateveryouwantok? We can sort it out later.
The good thing about doing it this way is that since we're all writing on the same photo, then we can all help each other. So share what you have at the end of 5 minutes. If you share, then you can keep track of your progress as as a spontaneous writer, which is the most important thing of all!
"Hey, you got the stuff? We have to be in Guam by tomorrow for the meeting."
"Eh, kinda . . . ."
"Kinda? Whaddya mean, kinda?"
"Well, the deal, urm, fell through . . . ."
"FELL THROUGH? FELL THROUGH? I spent weeks - months, even - trying to merge these cartels. I pulled more strings than a doll shop from a Disney movie to get this meeting organized, and the pin holding the whole thing together was that sample! And you don't have it?"
"Well, no. The guy told me that the deal was off. He said that the price we were asking was outrageous."
"And you just gave in there? Really?"
"What else could I've done?"
"I gave you that bag of birdseed for a reason. YOu coulda tranquilized the guy. Clawed him up. Threatened him. Anything BUT what you did do."
"Look, I was under a lotta pressure, and-"
"Just shut up. I'll get it myself. Useless henchmen . . . ."
Ok. I've decided that from now on the drills will be into Narrative, Descriptive, and Informative.
I'll put three parts of each section, so we can see the patterns that we make when we write.
Maybe knowing these patterns will help us understand why we block sometimes. Or maybe they will make us try harder to break out of our own patterns and just be more creative?
As you know, NASA just blasted the Holy begeezus out of the darkside of the moon. This is the news story and there is a video to watch as you prepare for the next round.
Take some time just to see how water and mood are matched by this artist. Then take 5 minutes to inform about how the water tells us something about the people in this photo:
The following photo shows a pair of Dreamriders. Their uniforms contain special abilities that help them do their job. So just take 5 minutes and inform how these abilities are used, and exactly what dreamriders do.
Without naming the item, or its kind, just describe what you see, as if seeing it for the 1st time and explaining it to someone who has no idea either. 5 minutes
OK, that's 3 stories, 3 informationals, and 3 descriptions. If you run through these drills, you can see strength and weankess in different areas of your writing, and they can help you to be a better spontaneous writer.
Soulhack117 - You have been holding a grudge against me for WAY too long. I also know that you have troubles with WRITER'S BLOCK. Maybe there is a connection between holding grudges and writer's block. Who knows?
Apparently you get it a lot. Cause you had it in August too! ...
(wow... Starbucks coffee, is really good if you have writers block...)
Look. You won't always have the time to "give it a break". There will be deadlines, or you'll just be to busy with other stuff, or maybe you forgot the assignment until it was to late. So you should keep in practice writing spontaneously with time and content restrictions.
You can't make the content restrictions, someone else has to do that for you, otherwise it doesn't work. That's all these drills do. You can use them and help yourself, or you can make fun of them and hurt yourself.
