Claimed by China, Taiwan has repeatedly attempted to join the UN but has been vetoed each time. Do they deserve recognition as a country or are they a mere province?

If they don't want to be part of China, they should claim their independence if they have not already done so. They should then be recognized as a seperate country and be allowed into the UN.

The question is do they really want that? Who are they?

Quebec supposedly WANTS to seperate from Canada, yet both times there was a referendum, less than 50% said they wanted their province to seperate. Of course the last time it was a mere .5% away...

But still, I'm curious of the numbers. Problem is we can't get any numbers cause it's freakin' China xD

Really!? I never knew that. Why does Quebec want to separate?

If the Taiwanese want to separate, they should.

OH OH OH! I love telling this story xD

Well a long time ago, when the area that is now Canada was colonized. Both the French and English came here, blah blah blah they fight and the English win.

But the English keep the French around, the plan was to assimilate them by forcing English everything on them and bringing as many English over as possible to make the English have a greater population.

Years later, Quebec whines about loss of culture, lack of power in the Canadian government, they dislike the power of the federal government, because they see it as English.

There has always been tension between English-Canadians and French-Canadians. So much so that Quebec has a political party solely for seperation from Canada. Although they only run in Quebec (don't ask) so they can't mathematically win a federal election =P

ANYWAYS, Quebec has had 2 referendums to decide if they were going to seperate. Both resulted in a no, although one was by a mere .5% of the population.

They even spawned the FLQ, a French-Canadian terrorist group which kidnapped foreign diplomats and bombed English businesses.

Interesting Fact, at that time Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (he was French, but was not a seperatist) enacted the War Measures Act, even though Canada was not at war. This act, allows police to arrest anyone without reason and hold them without charges for any length of time.

A little while ago there was worry about a resurgence of the FLQ, but that died down thank goodness =P

That's a very brief history, and more than likely English-Canadian biased.

No GAGAMEN, don't make dumb**** comments.

Quebec thinks that being the capitol of Canada and being 95% french speaking, that they could survive on their own with no help from the Canadian government.

Lawl.

-Ottawa is the capital
-if going by provinces, Ontario is the capital (which contains Ottawa)

Also: I have a chinesesfriend from Taiwan...he believes Taiwan is an independent country, and not a part of China.

Following World War II, the Republic of China, under the Kuomintang (KMT) became the governing polity on Taiwan. In 1949, after losing control of mainland China following the Chinese civil war, the ROC government under the KMT withdrew to Taiwan and Chiang Kai-shek declared martial law.
Japan formally renounced all territorial rights to Taiwan in 1952 in the San Francisco Peace Treaty. The KMT ruled Taiwan as a single-party state for forty years, until democratic reforms were mandated during the final year of authoritarian rule under Chiang Ching-kuo.
The reforms were promulgated under Chiang's successor, Lee Teng-hui, which culminated in the first ever direct presidential election in 1996. In 2000, Chen Shui-bian was elected the president, becoming the first non-KMT president on Taiwan. The 2008 election of President Ma Ying-jeou marked the second peaceful transfer of power, this time back to the KMT.
