So, what about all the people going *scratches head at odd suggestion* or "This is how the html would look < -something- > (and so on)" ?

Seems hard to make work...

don't they have buttons for those above the box you write your text

Not a bad idea, but I think it would confuse a lot of people. Might have been better if the site was younger.

I personally think that buttons would be easier, but for the people who would rather type asterisks, this is a good idea.

It's easier but using BBcode is more standard.

But then you can't use those to convey actions, such as *waves*, or *facepalm*, etc.
