I see where he is coming from. By saying 'Happy Holidays' you are not acknowledging his specific holiday by being special and basically saying it's just like everything else, etc. It could also be implying that he practices the other holidays as well, which he doesn't, causing annoyance at that incorrectness and making the person think that you think he's not the religion he says he is, which can be taken in offense.
I perceive it to be a bland and empty greeting with no real meaning. Also, what about Jehovah's witness they're probably offended by Happy Holidays. They don't celebrate all that junk.
well German, by saying merry christmas your not "forcing religion" upon someone? your just saying the name of the holiday and putting merry in front of it. i think people should say merry christmas
I say Merry Christmas, because that is what I celebrate. You don't have to be religious to celebrate Christmas.
I don't think people should take it offensive when someone says Happy Holidays. There are other winter-themed holidays other than Christmas, like Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. When you say Happy Holidays, you are referring to all of them presumably.
Well, usually "Happy Holidays" is said in markets. They say it because they might not know what your religious background is. So instead of saying "Merry Christmas," to an Atheist/Jew, they say Happy Holidays.
With the saying "Merry Christmas," it is best used when you are talking to a family member or friend. That is because you actually know how they would react to it (hopefully not bad).
I prefer saying "Happy Holidays" because I can say it to anyone I see without fearing that they would overreact and go crazy on me.
So instead of saying "Merry Christmas," to an Atheist/Jew, they say Happy Holidays.
If they're an Atheist, they are more likely to not celebrate any holidays. Saying "Merry Christmas" and saying "Happy Holidays" to an Atheist would not be too different from each other.
