Last week, the FBI inspected an empty super-maximum security prison in the near-forgotten town of Thomson, Illinois (located on the NW side of the state). The result of the inspection was the the prison was as well suited to hold Guantanamo prisoners as much as any other.
Today, Illinois Interim-Governor Pat Quinn authorized the move of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners to the prison. The prison has been/will be sold to the FBI, and once the prisoners are here they will begin receiving fair and just trials.
It has been said that this move will create 3,000 jobs, however it is unclear how many of those jobs will actually be in the Thomson area.
Most republicans are against the move, but one Illinois republican who formerly served the FBI said he has plenty of confidence the FBI will protect the nation. (Do not have a source for this, it was on Chicago Tonight -- a WTTW/PBS nightly broadcast, and I thought it was interesting.)
That's rather disturbing. But having family from western Illinois, I know the importance of new job openings in the area. I'm a little nervous about having such dangerous criminals in our country's borders, nevertheless, it won't be a problem if they do everything they promise with the security.
If they rig an electric chair there, I'm all for it.
I don't understand why people think these monsters deserve anything. Did they give us fair trials when they cut our heads off? No. Did the give us fair trials when they killed 2,900 people? No. Did they give the thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan fair trials when they r*ped the women and slaughtered the entire family?
I'm about 100 miles from the prison. But I don't see why people are so scared to have Guantanamo inmates near them. Most of those at Gitmo are just foreign fighters who are not even that dangerous. They were just fighting for their country. I'd be more scared of serial killers and schizophrenics.

Lethal injection or hanging, especially since IL is a very democratic state. We literally don't have a dozen republicans between the house and senate. But yeah, if it's discovered that they're terrorists, they'll eventually be killed.
such dangerous criminals
nothing's been proven at all, none of them have criminal records. They've simply been arrested under suspicion of being terrorists, nothing more.

Exactly. It's the FBI. I haven't heard of any reputable group challenging the FBI's security.

Caught-in-the-act (being a soldier) war crimes with the intent to scare the enemy and murders/rapes during wars are different than arresting and torturing someone because they might be a terrorist. Yes, that's much due reason to arrest someone, but not to ignore the possibility of the fact that many of them have no plausible evidence of being terrorists. Let's say one of them isn't a terrorist: we just tortured someone.... why? When they kill our troops, they see our troops in uniform. We had little to no physical evidence when arresting most of these individuals. Also, since we've been pressured by terrorists plenty times before over releasing the Guantanamo prisoners, it'd be a good idea to see whether they're even useful individuals.
I live in Chicago, a bit more than 100 miles away. And if it helps your unsupported fears any, it's pretty much on the Western border of IL.
okay what are we suppose to discuss, i think its fine
Sorry, forgot to specify.
Security, mostly, with it being the central issue around this.
What comes with security is the possibility of whether or not they are terrorists. If they are most/all terrorists, that security is slightly questionable. If they are most/all not terrorists, that security is absolutely solid.

It's a consequence of wriggling out the guilty, whom most of them are. They claim such absolute horror, and sure, water boarding and dogs are used to scare them, but if I were loyal to my country, and I wanted to find out who really is a mass murdering slime ball, I would find my own mental destruction just another part of war.
If their caught in the act of it, they aren't 'suspected' terrorists. They never make it to GitMo, as military court marshals have them shot long before they get on a plane.

Not painful enough, not quick enough.
In the electric chair, you have 0% chance of feeling a dam* thing after 8 seconds, if the initial jolt didn't fry your brain to begin with. It's quick, it's effective.

Oh no no no, I have no fear of them escaping. The FBI and the military are perfectly trustworthy, and I trust them. If they try to escape, they've got quite a bit to go through.
I don't live in Il, but I suspect they whould be able to take down whatever terrorist (If they are terrorist)excapes the prison. And since this is becoming a death penilty thread, I think its good. If they are a killer, then its safer to slay them then to keep them in a cage. If you kill somone for no or little reason, you diserve to die.

I agree with that. But since they're in the US, they have a right to Due Process of Law, which is the right to a trial and the right to be treated fairly by government.

Exactly. Which is why this is different than when US soldiers are killed in other prisons, as the US soldiers are caught in the act.
Torturing is a perfect punishment
Torturing is a technique designed to get people to talk. Which is useless when you have no idea if those people even have information.
What IS a good punishment, that actually IS a punishment?
How about the one already established in the US? War crime => Death. I suspect they may torture/"interrogate" more if it is found that the prisoners are terrorists, but I'm not sure. It goes against US policies, but the FBI gets to do whatever the fuck it wants in wars anyways.

But we are better then them, its that simple. Terrorists would and do torture people. Therefore we won't.
