Personally, I think this could put Sony way ahead of the competition, with the 360 not even having a Bluray drive, and the Wii with no HD compatibility.
Even better, the PS3 is forwards compatible with these discs. Hopefully we'll see these 3D movies, and 3D gaming in the near future!
The main killer is you need a "3D compatible display", aka a new TV. -.-
I don't think it will be taking off too quickly. Remember the normal blu-ray? That was supposed to be the new thing, and look at how much of an epic fail that is. And the 3D Tv's, while in development, probably won't work out...most people don't want to wear sunglasses-type-things when the watch the television.
Though, Bluray is already an established technology, and they will still be using Bluray discs, with a different codec.
That's the only problem though... the 3D technology is very new. I don't think too many people will be buying the 3D tvs. I mean... look at how many people still don't have HDTVs.
We already have 3D gaming. PC gaming has already been on top of this for a while now. RE5 in particular was designed for 3D on the PC platform and looks incredible in 3D. Works with all kinds of back titles on PC as well - though some better then others.
I'm just giggling about the difference in spending money for a 3D capable PC monitor & a 3D capable big-screen TV is going to be.
A 3D compatible TV? That sounds like something Best Buy would try to sell us....exclusively at Best Buy. The only thing about this that makes it new I suppose is that its both Blu-ray and 3D at the same time, but even then its basically the same thing with a little bit better graphics. If they wanted to I bet that the 360 could already have a 3D gaming experience(outside of the virtual 3D that people are familiar with of course) but either way graphics in games like movies does not always matter, and this is still probably not going to make-up for all of the features that are probably going to be available once Natal comes out, but I could be wrong about that of course, only time will tell.
