Which party do you think will come into power? Both Labour and the Conservatives have admitted they will increase taxes if voted into power. Gordon Brown hasn't done a very good job of governing this country, and his Cabinet aren't exactly helping him. Alistar Darling cut the VAT to 15%, just to increase it 6 months later, with a £9 million excess to his Department, when prices are still the same as last year at this time, which, pardon if anyone thinks otherwise, was just a pointless waste of money. We need leadership that can cut the national debt, and also keep control of their own party, unlike Labour, who most MPs don't even trust Gordon Brown, despite him fronting their political party.

The Tories will get in. 3 terms then a change of government. It's always the way.

Probably, but people aren't really voting for any major party anymore. But I think I can say one thing for sure, Labour won't get in.

Yeah, Labour is dead next election. From Iraq to the spending controversies, they don't stand a chance. Labour will lose a lot of seats and the Tories will gain most of those.

I have a feeling that the BNP (British National Party) will gain some seats. The UKIP (UK Independence Party) will gain more votes, but will probably remain without any seats. They are more for the EU elections. The Liberals might get a few more seats, but I won't be surprised if they remain are about the same # of seats or less. I don't think any of the Welsh parties will make any gains. The SNP might be able to steal a few seats from Labour, but not enough to make a huge difference. Some Irish Unionist and Republican parties might switch hands. But the gains and losses will probably cancel out.

Not sure about that one.

That goes for the BNP too. Despite how ridiculously undemocratic FPTP is, this is what it's good for - keeping nutters out of parliament.

The Liberals might get a few more seats, but I won't be surprised if they remain are about the same # of seats or less.

Not sure. It depends on the marginal constituencies. Don't forget the Tories and the Liberals were originally the same party, and as such, have very similar democraphic appeal. This is where the election will be decided. It's not the liberals to win, but they coudl royally screw over the Tories and create a hung parliament, which would make me immensely pleased I have to say. For too long we've had an over bearing executive in this country.

The SNP might be able to steal a few seats from Labour, but not enough to make a huge difference.

The failure of their budget last year showed how weak they really are. The Scots seem to be turning away from the fat Salmond, and going back to Labour.

Some Irish Unionist and Republican parties might switch hands. But the gains and losses will probably cancel out.

The cool thing is though, these parties could have a massive impact if it turns out to be a hung parliament. Look at the vote on the war in Iraq. Labour only got it through due to a dodgy deal between them and the unionists, promising them X amount of fiscal spending no doubt.

Oh and I'd also just like to say how cool this thread is for 2 reasons, 1 being that it is about UK politics for a change, and 2 that an American has gotten involved, since so often they show little interest in their bretheren across the pond.

Im sure Labour won't be in power but I don't really enjoy the idea of Conservatives getting into power.

It's just all the other parties don't really stand out, either we get a bad government or a terrible one.

That's because they know we have to vote in a party, and the pick isn't excatly exciting.

Here's what I hope. The Tories get in, prove themselves to be the self interested ne'er do wells they really are, lose to Labour in 4 years who by this time realise they have to start formulating some real policy that doesn't rely on throwing money at problems.

Since Tony Blair came to power, the Labour and Conservatives have been about the same damn thing. Labour went from center-left to center-right. Cutting spending but not taxes, invading countries, and stealing money is all Labour has done. I'm a far-leftist, but I'd much rather have the Tories than Labour in power.

Before Blair came in, they were insanely left wing. They didn't even abandon clause IV til 1995.

Cutting spending but not taxes,

There has been more spending under New Labour than under any post WW2 government.

invading countries

Neither party has the balls to reject the Americans.

and stealing money is all Labour has done

Stealing money? From who?

I'm a far-leftist, but I'd much rather have the Tories than Labour in power.

And a return to Thatcherism with a new face? No thank you.

No leader is perfect. There will be things wrong with the PM yes, but hopefully nothing major (e.g Gordon=Doesn't know how to run country)

Brown is actually an extremely capable pair of hands. But he's not suited to leadership, as he doesn't understand delegation or public relations.

You want lightweight, look no further than Cameron. Even Obama called him lightweight, before he was president. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black (no racial pun intended).

That said, I really hope he shows himself to have the stones. We are going to have him for at least 4 years and probably 8.
