While talking with a few friends in study hall today, I came upon the thought of patenting things everyone uses everyday, that have no patent. (to my knowledge anyways)

Like...the english laungege. Is it illegal for me to get a patent on it, and start charging people money to use it?

Or could I patent the color purple? Just for kicks and giggles?

Or perhaps water, just to mess with peoples heads?

I'm sure something somewhere prevents me from doing this, but is it possible and has anyone ever tried?

Why, that's evil.
If you patented the english language you would be rolling money in by the millions. But then, people would change languages.
Of course, if you patented water...

You'd make more patenting Mandarin, though then all of the Mandarins would switch to Cantonese.

I don't think that's possible. In a sense, everyone already has a patent on these things. Like a GNU Free License Agreement.

Something like that.

I would patent existence. I would get a ton of money from that. I would even get money from the money itself.

Patents and copyrights are two different things. GNU Free License is copyright. And you can't copyright a language, but you can copyright a work done in a language.

Some basic information on patents pertaining to this thread:

Patents are also subject to local law.

But there aren't enough patents to make money.

Argon is used in lightbulbs. We all need lightbulbs. Tehrefore, I win.

And Xenon sounds cool. Therefore it's mine.

You can't just patent things willy nilly, there is an order to the system.

No you can't get a patent on those things. Though you can get some pretty ridiculous trademarks.
