In recent news schools have been punishing students because of things they have done after school hours and at home. Such as cyber bullying, which isn't allowed in most schools. Should schools be able to punish students for things they do on the internet, out side of school restrictions?
I think that if schools find out about this going on, they should not be allowed to punish the children for it, however, I believe that they should be obligated to notify the parents of the students involved if they find out about things like this happening.
Well if its cyber bullying i think yes they should be able to because...your not able to harass some one on the street or anywhere else right? what makes it right to do so behind a computer? now im not saying they should be watching us but if they find out yes i think they should be able to...its driven kids to kill them selves from cyber bullying or worse...taking a gun to school and unloading no one wants that
what jurisdiction does the school have over what you or me do at home, and if we where punished for saying mean things to each other then everyone would be punished, suicide is a choice and not forced, if people don't like being harassed on the internet then get off of it, if u call me names in public i will probably walk away, freedom of speech is a
constitutional right
and if i want to call someone ugly, to bad, it is illegal to punish someone and take their freedom of speech away
your not able to harass some one on the street or anywhere else right?
Go and harass someone on the street. When you've done so, come back and tell me did your teacher slap you on the wrist? Your teacher does not come if you harass someone on the street, nor should they if it's cyber bullying.
That the parent's job - looking out for their children and making sure they've got the right habits. The school's job is to help with academic studies not to help with your moral upbringing.
its driven kids to kill them selves from cyber bullying or worse
So? School remains out of the picture. If the kid is that sensitive and affected by the bullying and the parents do not bat an eyelid then it's their fault, and if the child cannot tell their parents it's the child's fault too. If neither end of their family is doing their job allow the school notify, but they should not be involved in directly helping.
If im nearschool grounds, and get into a fight, the school can still take action on me. even though im not on school grounds, nor during hours. Stupid...
As for cyber bullying, its a bunch of crap. get over it
No. Schools should have the right to punish only for the things that are done in the school.
I agree. Now in the case of cyber bullying if a schools computer was used in the process in some way then yes the school does have the right to take action.
If all of the sudden the schools kids are dropping left and right from suicide than the school should take action if it is a single incedent than the school should mind it's own crap and leave the h*ll alone.
Seems to me like the schools are trying to get a lot more authority then they deserve. No, they shouldn't, the schools are not a law enforcement agency, thankfully, and have no right to enforce their abundance of policies on anyone not on their campus. This is the job of the parents who need to dicipline their children, not the schools. The school's job is to give them some form of a basic eduction, not raise them.
Nope, not right at all. My school encompasses three miles outside of its actual area. So technically if your within the area, they have right to take action. And actually, if a kid is hit by legal issues that arise from the school or anywhere else the school has right to give following discipline based on what they hear.
Idk, but, I don't think that they should be sitting out there trying to raise them. Stopping violence is nice, crying over cyber bullying is retarded.
But where do we draw the line? Obviously, one shouldn't be allowed to cyber bully at school. But they shouldn't enforce rules that make sense at school outside of school. I'm not allowed to use my cellphone in class, so should I not be allowed to use it at home, either? What about video games? What about R rated movies?
While I don't think that schools should be able to punish students for bullying outside of school, they could intervence in other ways. Like having a teacher talk to the bully (though that might just escalate the situation).
