Some of you might have been lucky to get a comment from a few of the more concerned users in this matter. Asking you to spread the word of this important issue, and help save the tigers. Or the wolves. Or the... While it is important to preserve the different species, it has become more clear that only the more - important species have been mentioned. Most of the species that goes extinct has never been mentioned, or have only been mentioned as "the thousand and thousand species that goes extinct". Or we hear about them afterwards, when the damage has been done, or moments before it is too late. A Danish comedian made a joke on this. That he was asked to donate money to the last two of a species. He asked why that would be. Would it help them breed or something? No, they should just have a nice life, since one was a male and the other sterile.
So, why is it that the more popular animals get all the attention, while other, possibly more important, but less known animals get no help what so ever? And, since everything dies, should we even help? Does it even matter to spread the word, when an animal like a tiger is going extinct?
I whould assume it also goes along with human phycology. The media blasts things that are either "cute and fuzzy" or somthing to that effect. Most people who donate want to save the rabbits, wolves, tigers because they think there cute and in danger, while saving the Gripbacked Snickerdropper bird that they never heard of doesen't appeal to them.
Many animals are endangered, but we only care for few. For example here in Greece there is a campaign for the Caretta caretta, but none for Cretan Frog, which is found only in Greece. I think we should try to help, because we are the cause of the extinction and endangerment of these animals. If their extinctions were caused by nature we should not intervene, but are not. We should try to help to protect these animals and to teach the persons to respect the animals, in this way less species will have to face in the future such problems.
Yeah, I do enjoy a good tiger steak every now and then...
But seriously, it isn't just about the "cuddlyness" of an animal. A lot of the time people try harder to save animals that are of cultural significance, such as the panda. People don't want to save the more obscure animals because no one notices them even when they were around. For instance, there are some famous poems written about Tigers (or tygers...), but I have never heard anything written in praise of a cretan frog. Other animals, such as the bowhead whale, provide food for entire communities in addition to being iconic. I'm sure the Goumas' cretan frog feeds no one, which is another reason why no one cares.
Dunno. Yeah, there is a lot of animals that are endangered and no one even cares about them, they just care about tigers or pandas. I have nothing against those, but we need to start saving the other animals.
One: His was actually advertising of a link. While it might be good for spreading the course, it had no discussion in it, and simply asked people to help out. Idk what your definition of "like this" is, but I would say it is different. I was asked to make a thread that would be legit to have in the forums, but of course, if you believe this discussion is against the rules, be free to report it, and we can have it locked again.
This is deffo different. While you are still showing an issue that you would like people to be involved in you also ask for debate on whether we SHOULD save the animals.
The other save the tigers post was litteraly only asking people to save the tigers, and was giving absoluty no topic for discussion.
I think thats a pretty big difference.
I dont think this thread should be locked at all. But I DO think people need smacked upside the head if they think any species isnt worth saving. My bodyguard will dish out the pain to anyone willing to travel to the UK.
