It's been suggested that we start a "science" forum.

I'll take the initiative by posing the question, "Do you think our planet is suffering because the polar ice caps are melting due to man's neglect, abuse, pollution, etc?

If so, please be respectful of others and have an honest debate.

I would hope that the human race hasn't completely "tanked" the planet by gross negligence. So, I think we're experiencing another natural cycle of beach erosion, colder weather in the southern states, more hurricane activity. These events could be warnings of another "little ice age".

Until I research this further, I'll call it "climate change".

Not wholly. Humans and man-made machinery all make contributions to the changes in the atmosphere and consequently the Earth is heating up. However, it's likely that natural cycles are more potent, and therefore more capable of altering the climate and raising global temperatures. There will be consequences due to the melting of the ice caps, like the disappearance and flooding of many low-lying islands, but a lot of islands were probably flooded before when these natural cycles last occurred.

I wouldn't call it negligence. We do make efforts now that artificial alteration to the climate is a widely accepted dogma, but the necessary things that we do (that require substances that aid the change of the climate) should not be stopped because the world is heating up. It would be stupid going back to the Victorian era because the planet may be heating up when the problem can be solved if we strengthen the efforts we are currently making, like finding alternative sources of energy.

I think both global warming and climate change are slowly taking affect, but climate change sort of covers the change in temperatures.

I agree that by lowering emmissions from factories and cars, transferring coal burning industries to natural gas powered ones are steps in the right direction. I'm just curious if these measures are too little, too late.

In reference to the "Victorian era", why would we want to? Queen Victoria was great for progress but isn't this the era that caused the most pollution?

If I'm wrong, speak up, because that's my understanding.

I believe that both affect the Earth. However, Global Warming is something that has been blown way out of proportion. Not only that, but information is only revealed that supports their decision. Sure, at points there were the highest temperatures of a few years time. This was only in certain places though, other areas had the coldest temperatures. Polar ice caps are melting while other places freeze. These are things that many supporters of Global Warming do not allow others to see.

I heard somewhere that we are still coming out of the last ice age to a degree. The Earth is very dynamic and constantly changing, it's laughable for us to believe the way the planet is today is how it will be in ten thousand years or was ten thousand years ago for example. The Earth has had several ice ages and has come out of them meaning "global warming" has occured before, possibly even an explanation for the biblical Noah story (local area faces severe flooding due to raising sea levels, people think the entire world is flooding due to divine retribution). Humanity could be affecting climate change to a degree, though I belive most of climate change is part of a natural process that has occured for millions of years and will continue for millions more.

this is open and shut, many people don't know that global warming increases both, cold and hot temp. not just hot. it increases the difference between the two. Also it has been proven and widely accepted by almost all of the scientific community and is taught in school so there is no argument, there is absolutely no evidence proving it wrong, people say well it is natural, yes it is natural and has a speed of cooling and warming, but we as humans have excelled this warming and cooling to a greater extent, this is overextended to an extent bec. of it's importance, this is an issue, no earth no living period so it has to be taken extremely seriously.

I had no idea there was another thread called,"Global Warming" and since it's been revived let's direct future posts to that one. Thanks.
