As hard as it is for anybody in this age group to admit it, Michael Jackson is the most influential musical icon of the past thirty years. His music inspired many of today's hip-hop and R&B musicians, and the entire black community. MJ taught the African American community that they too can excel in a line of work that is dominated by whites. As you might not know, pop music was entirely white-dominated in the late-70's early-80's, and MJ and Lionel Ritchie were the first two African American superstars in pop music in the MTV era.
Second is John Lennon. Even though he lived a breif one year in this time period, he inspired many the world over, and his death just magnified his influence ten fold. Many say, including Aerosmith's Joe Perry, that Lennon was the reason they wanted to be in a rock band.
Third is Kurt Cobain. His music changed rock & roll forever. It wasn't that his band created mega hits, it's just that Cobain was unafraid to express himself in his music, and, because of him and his band, much creative music exists today. Musicians are no longer afraid of barriers. Also, Kurt Cobain's musical hero growing up was John Lennon. Another fact: Cobain's favorite band was the Beatles. Same with Ozzy. Same with Joe Perry, etc. I know that had nothing to do with this subject.
Honorable mention to "JamMaster" Jay of Run-DMC, often considered the John Lennon of rap. And like Lennon, he too was slain by a gunman. If you don't know who he is, contact Ernie.

but the thing about mustane was that he was kicked out of metallica for being a showboat but then goes on and made his own band which was just as big as metallica. the thing about him was that even though he was an ass hole he was still an AMAZING song writer.
