well the reason you pay is because they have people in offices who keep the servers going and you get the latest demos movies and stuff on the marketplace because thats why the ps3 servers are rubbish so thats roughly why you pay.
nope. The only reason its better now, is because that 50 bucks a year gets you great dedicated servers. Without that it fall below the ps3s online, as there would be too many people and the servers would crash out. Since the online is the only thing keeping it in competition with the ps3, microsoft is going to need to keep it up.
No. Though I hate Microsoft, you can't deny that Xbox Live is a champion. And Microsoft needs money to keep it running the way it is. They probably have enough money already, but most of us don't mind paying up for it.

if microsoft werent exploitive deleted then yes that would pretty help end xbox vs ps3. point is microsoft has so much money it should be free and it should be kept up to the highest standards. sony has less money and they do it for free and they do a pretty kickass job at it too.
of course it would be better if it was free. why would you want to pay for something that isnt even the best?!
playstation gets internet browser and everything and xbox gets games..... theres no point in paying so in a scence they are ripping you off for what other systems are charging.
honestly, the only reason PSN is better then xbox live is because its free and it WAS the only reason i use ps3s. there has been a chainmail going on that psn will cost money unless X number of people send this message. it will be tracked bla bla bla, they're all fake. there was one saying that it was fake and if you send this to 35 people you will get 37 dollars for ur psn account. i dont think thats real either, but just spreading that one to STOP the ---gots who spread the others :]
1. Dedicated servers aren't free. If you think developers are gonna provide free servers, you're wrong. PS3 servers are 3rd Party servers created by the developer, so they might not be reliable. Xbox 360 servers have dedicated (paid-for) servers, which means they are more reliable and guarenteed to work (you get what you pay for).
2. Microsoft can't provide the videos and demos it has without extensive bandwidth. They are rich, granted, but they can't spend all their money on keeping up servers. So, they have you pay for the online to keep it steady. Again, you get what you pay for.
Final Verdict: If Microsoft made XBox Live free, then it would suck hard and Sony would gain the upper hand. And I hate it when Sony gains the upper hand, because I HATE SONY!
