I would like to state that this thread has nothing to do with Politics and Religion, so don't mention it.

I saw a PBS thing about this last night, and I thought it was extremely interesting.

The afterglow is what it says, after the big bang there were still radiation clouds, this does not prove the big bang was real, but this was a huge step to probing it was real.

As you can see from the picture the universe is expanding, one theory is that galaxies are moving away from each other at amazing speeds.

How it was discovered:

in 1962 two scientist built a large... thingy. The scientist were supposedly trying to boost radio waves. While they were doing there research there was an annoying background noise, they thought it was the machine or other radio waves, checking and cleaning out the machine.

The background noise came from all directions so it wouldn't have been a commercial radio wave. At the same time a man at Princeton University was studying the Big Bang Theories, he hypothesized that residue 13.7 Billion years later would still be able to get detected, the amazing thing is is that the temperature of the Big Bang residue was 2 degrees above absolute zero.

the background noise is also known as 'the noise of the beginning of the universe'.

Pretty awesome.

Yes, I've heard this before several times. Sadly since this does not prove the Big Bang remains a theory, though this is compelling evidence.

Background microwave radiation from the big bang. Here's what it looks like.

We can also create models and determine the shape of our universe by comparing those models to the actual thing. As it turns out it best matches a flat universe, illustrated here.
