I am considering building my own so I can play Left 4 Dead 2 on my computer, but I need to know a price range. I don't really care how long it takes-- I have a lot of free time.

Gaming PC I presume? Sadly, no.

Although my Uncle has, it cost him over 1 Grand to do it so I hope you have a big enough wallet for it. The price is the biggest issue, along with the teche stuff. I'd look at some AlienWare or Digital Storm computers to look at their specs and base that off your own computer. And you should have a broader reach that one game.

Another thing to remember is that the latest and greatest parts for computers cost more separately than they do when in a pre-built.

Building a PC may be cheaper than pre-built, depending on what your aiming for, and what you are comparing to. However, building your own PC is a very valuable experience. It'll definitely help you understand computers more.

Since most of us here aren't hardware types, go somewhere else for help. You might as well enlist the help of someone who knows how to build a computer. That way, you can do it yourself next time.

Nah. Proprietary branding makes things expensive.

yeah, like the others said it really depends on just how well you want it to perform, as for specific components, often just reading reviews and articles outlining graphics cards or processors can help a lot to find out what exactly you need and for what price you can get it. a decent well-rounded PC made by yourself should be around $700 to no more than $900. also, i by any chance you don't feel like building your own or don't know entirely how to, many websites allow specific customization (Dell HP Alienware), and many times end up being cheaper than a monster PC with more than you are going to use

Alienware is okay but I think they're owned by Dell.

Alienware is also overpriced, try Digital Storm for pre-builts.

Sigh, no they don't. That's the POINT of making your own computer, you want to have a good setup while not having to pay as much.

I tried to build my computer before I bought it, it would have cost atleast $500 more.

I learnt "how to build a computer" at school but never could do one myself by lack of time and I needed a laptop.
However, if you want a computer to play only, look after barebones, it'll cost you between 500⬠and 600⬠MAX.
If you want a classic tower I think it should cost you less than 800⬠with a good config (my laptop, prebuilt of course, was about 650⬠with 4Go RAM, dualcore 2.1GHz and 1Go for video card so a tower at that price should be far better !).

I have no clue what you're talking about at all. How do you figure it would cost more to build your own computer, when if you buy one you pay for branding and labor?

So for the confusion. What I meant was that I saw a computer that had both what I needed and wanted. It was a Dell built specifically for Best Buy shortly after the Intel Core i7 came out. I then tried to build an equivalent pc, but could not do it for the price Best Buy was selling it for.

What typed of hardware were you trying to get?

I've never tried building my own PC, not having the resources, but I've always wanted to give it a shot.

I've done with a few times. $800 will get you near a monster PC. You can probably get what you want for less than $600. It depends.

I can put up a build if you want (a list of all the parts)

Alienware may be expensive but it uses the best that comes out.. it is known as a first user so when a new product is made Alienware tries it.. I happen to own an Alien and I love it. Its fast and reliable and no computer can compare to it..

Except any computer using the same hardware, that's much cheaper...

Branded PCs suck! To get one with a decent video card you'd have to buy one that's over 1.2 grand.

Below that, they are all equipped with either onboard or some cheap shit, like a 9500Gs. And they come with cheap power supplies, motherboards and cases, which means that if you want to make a simple upgrade, then you pretty much have to change every part.

I also find them over priced.
If you re use some parts from your computer (Cd drive, hard drive) and sacrifice some processing power (you probably don't need an i7 quadcore anyway), you can probably get a computer for $500 with an up to date video card that will rape any new game out there.
