These sites are very controversial in schools. If you are able to use one, you are automatically able to go to any website in the universe. This could be a problem becouse you could look up some,... Inapropriate things. However, teachers block sites for reasons that are stupid to us so why should we not be allowed to use proxies to bypass some of the stupid bans and get on game sites.
aknerd is your computer operating wirelessly or do you plug it into the network via a cable? Because if you're using wireless, what you saying is complete and utter bull,,
Even if its wireless, the security is in the network, which he has to go through to reach the internet.
Obviously some things should be blocked in schools, but most are blocked because the schools administrators don't know what they are doing.
No, I'm talking about a laptop that I bought with my own money, and brought to school to use for a presentation. It is my computuer. The same goes for iphones and other personal devices that can be used for internet navigation: all are blocked by the school's internet filter.
Ah, well back luck then. Your school is full of bull. Wait, did you buy it for your own use and brought it to school just to use, or did you have to provide it for school? Oh, and I never like schools that do that.
I forgot to add that the filter blocks any site that contains curse words. Most of the books we read in my literature class contain f-bombs, so it is very hard to research quotes at school.
You should be able to since researching a quote with profanity would be part of your education. Er, might as well use a computer that is not the school's.
At my school you can't type in Wikipedia without it being blocked. They also blocked Google for a while and google videos is permanently shut down.
Why'd they block Google? Or Wikipedia? What are you allowed to browse?
While some of those deserve it, most don't. In fact, one of my teachers acctually asks for proxies occasionally so she coan go to Youtube.
Y'know that really seems hypocritical from a certain viewpoint. Since teachers are there to teach. Though I don't care too much.
If in an instance that you need to go on the internet somewhere and it is blocked. Is it permissable to use a proxy and if so, what should punishment be if you are caught?
I wouldn't waste my time using proxies to bypass school filters. Don't even get a opportunity to use computers there much. Might as well use mine.

Youtube can be educational. There are news clips and whatever on it. Before our teachers were given the filter password, they used to download youtube videos at home so they could show them at school.
Wait, did you buy it for your own use and brought it to school just to use, or did you have to provide it for school?
Both... Most of my classes require typed essays and whatnot, so having a computer is definetly helpful. My school has never required me to actually bring my laptop to class, but I have anyway because it makes presenting/working on projects easier. Most of the computers our school provides are outdated, and we aren't allowed to download updated programs.
Er, might as well use a computer that is not the school's.
I do. Usually when we are given time to research in class (which is very rare, for reasons that should be apparent), we just play on sporacle, and then do the research at home. I'm pretty sure that that is the opposite of how it is supposed to work...
I mean, sure it's their house, that they payed for with their money, and they don't want it to get dirty. But I mean, they're your shoes and you can wear them where ever the f*ck you want, right?
That's a good point, except for the fact that going on youtube doesn't cost the school extra money.
Obviously some things should be blocked in schools, but most are blocked because the schools administrators don't know what they are doing.
That is exactly right. Basically, all of the problems stem from the fact that the admins are trying to use a quick fix for a complicated problem.
The computers at schools are made for you to do school work and not goof off and play games. My school dosen't block AG so I have gone on it multiple times but that is only when I am done. My school is also really strict about students going on gaming sites. It is usually an automatic detention so that is probably why I think that.
A lot of people mentioned bringing in personal computers. I don't know a single kid who has their own personal computer. Why should those kids not use proxies?

I know, and I also know how Youtube can be non-educational. Should ask valkery what the teacher actually does on Youtube?

So they put filters on your laptop? Or not? Yeah, suckish outdated software.

Me too. Er, shouldn't you be doing research?

You're in India right? When I used to live in the Philippines, many people frequented internet cafes since they couldn't afford computers. Still, the school owns those computers and the owner is reserved the right to how it they should be used, even if it's unfair.
oh man in my school EVERYTHING is filtered because some kids got onto some porn in front of the ict teacher so now only about 10 websites aren't blocked

No... LOL. I just live in a hick town and no one has a personal laptop, or very few people at that.
So they put filters on your laptop? Or not? Yeah, suckish outdated software.
The filters are not on the computers themselves, but on the network. To connect to the schools internet you have to use their network which they use to block seemingly random sites.

I'm getting confused now don't mind what I said. Ah yes, rural places.

I forgot that. Solution, don't use your school's network and do what PI said, pay for wireless internet through USB modems. You could even plug in one of those typical wired Ethernet modems, if you want to. I never like it when schools attempt to extend their reach into one's home.

No, it's just at school. I can use my laptop for whatever I want at home, because it is a different network. At school, I have to use the school's network.
For instance, right now I am using my laptop to go on armorgames. At school, this same laptop would be unable to go to this website, because most gaming websites are blocked.
You're confusing me. Well, you'll have to stick with your school's filtering ways. They'd notice if you used a wireless modem at school, wouldn't they?
