I made a website with my friends:
pinjastudios
We need help with ideas to make our games. We will post our games on the i-pod app store and maybe a couple games will be on Steam.

Try to make games for online gaming sites like AG, Kong, Newgrounds... ect. As far as I know Steam only does disc games and such, and Apple is like the online gaming things. Make a few test games on Adobe Flash and post them here.

Okay I knew that the steam idea was not a good one but thank-you for the idea about testing it on here. I hope other people will be as helpful as you.

Yes, the website is at webs! That is because it is easy to use and we do not need the website for much. Otherwise, thanks for the advice about Adobe Flash.

Well if you want to make successful games I would research and study games that are already popular. Don't copy them but see what they do right and just add your own creativity to it. You might even want to try talking to some of the game designers on ArmorGames. They might have some good advice or tips for you. At one point they were just like you.

Things that tend to lead to success and what kind of success they acheive:
Acheivments! - They generally egg the player to continue playing, depending on how hard they are and what award (besides bragging rights) that come with it. If you have rewards with the acheivments (in game, of course), then it's likely that more people will continue playing the same game.

A Good Story! - great storytellers and writers can be found in the AG art forums for one. A good story will make the game more enjoyable as well as more memorable. If it's memorable then it's likely a person will ask another person to play it or try it out since it was so fun.

Unique combat! - a combat system that is either making fun of (another game) or is just completely unique (much like how in FFXII) will generally make a game more memorable. People will use the same idea of "it was good, try it" on other people, making more supporters.

Fantasy and Sci-fi combined! - My greatest example is final fantasy. it has great fantasy aspects to it yet it is still sci-fi ish too. People just love either of these genres of games.

Replayability/Sandbox! - Everyone loves a sandbox mode. It makes the game playable for hours.

Those are a few examples of good things to add in a game, or think about.

Ah Thoad, achievements keep people entertained and coming back. Dan (Mc Neely) said that too.

As for ideas, you should talk to developers, gather people's input, (online, real life) research existing games (doesn't have to be flash), do some of your own brainstorming and look for inspiration.

Replayability is a very important to extend a game's lifespan. Storyline is not necessary in all games, but in those that need it, storyline will either make or break your game.
