66 years ago, perhaps the largest amphibious assault in history was launched, with 24,000 airborne troops, over 160,000 landing troops, and 195,700 naval personnel in almost 7000 ships partaking in Operation Neptune. Seven nations--the United States, the United Kingdom, the Free French, Poland, Canada, Norway, and Australia--combined their might to invade a 50-mile coast separated into 5 beaches. The Allies had around 10000 casualties to the Axis' 4000-9000. The battle was a decisive victory for the Allies, as the liberation of Western Europe began with the beachhead established here.

To those who survived and to those who lost their lives, we salute you.

We wouldnt have gotten in the war if japan hadnt done d-day so in a way japan saved the world because we would have just let hitler take over europe since that was our forign policy then.And you got to remeber we just came out of the stock market crash so we really didnt have the funds to go to war because we were still trying to recover from the stock market crash.

We still lost more. A bit of a disappointment.

However, with our overwhelming numbers, losing was near impossible. Which is a good thing for freedoms sake. That would have been screwed up if Hitler would have taken over all of Europe.

To those who lived and died, you rock.

And ShadowShank, you've used more bold in that one post than I have in a month. Do not ever touch the bold button again, please.

A disappointment?

Anyway, D-Day spelled the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. If it hadn't been so successful, the war might of dragged on for longer.

@ShadowShank696

Yeah... The Japanese conducted the attack on Pearl Harbor, not the Normany landings. Where did you get your information? I think America would of still gotten into war if Japan hadn't attacked it, depending on whether or not Europe could hold out. I believe if Hitler managed to crush the USSR and Britain, then the war would spread all around.

Therefore, I salute those who participated in the Normandy landings and Operation Overlord in general. You're awesome.
