Well recently i was reading gameinformer and i came across the craziest article and in short, its talking about this person who is going on a rant saying video games aren't art, as they don't give you any freedom. And everything is set to one condition. So im asking you guys:

Are video games art?

a video game is an art.
you design it,
sometimes it's good
sometimes it sucks.
sometimes it's nice, there are different style, different ones for everyone.

Some people say it is art. I have a friend. He is left-handed and a teacher of mine said that left-handed people are creative and also more of an artistic person. But what I don't understand is my friend, the supposedly artistic person, hates arts and wish it hadn't been created but, he loves video games more than anything and have a PS1,PS2,PS3 and XBOX 360. He doesn't play PS1 and PS2 anymore saying it's out of date, his XBOX gone kaboom when he played too long and is playing PS3 everyday of every week of every month.

When I ask him (he's the genius of the class) is video games art, he said it is. What baffles me is that video game is a form of entertainment, so why is it called an art? I don't know. Maybe it is like a picture drawn by an artist. Sometimes we can understand it and sometimes we can't. Sometimes it is very known through out the planet like Mona Lisa, but sometimes it isn't very known like my 2nd grade's painting.

Creating a video game IS an art. All the time needed to develop the graphics and the code behind it and the often awesome results really make it an art !

Some video games are true art, as for example Oblivion, with side missions, twists and surprises around every corner, and the possibility of decide what to do (also: round characters[betrayals, secrets, undercover love...]). Some even include whole new concepts (e.g. Portal) These are art as related to the plot.
Then there's those games with straightforward plots that have unique, innovating features, as a new control system, which can be considered artistic in a technical way.
And last but not least there's those games with outstanding graphical design, which we can consider art in a pictoric way (the last CODs, the Halo series, Crysis...).
One game can have various features from each of these "sections" (for example: in Crysis there is more than one way to face battles, Oblivion's landscapes are outstanding...).
At least, that's my oppinion.

Yes. Creating video games will require artwork. Everything about a video game is art. If you watch some videos of professional staff creating their own games with awesome programs, you would be amazed. If not, then you are missing out on things.

video games are art. poetry is art, and online computer games like "LOVED" are like peotry. stories are art, and video games tell a story, even ones like super mario. music is art, and video games definitely have alot of music in them. Whoever says video games are in no way art, they must be on some kind of weird medication or something because video games ARE art!

Playing a game is not art but are video games art themselves? Yes most definetly really it is a combination of several arts, music, graphics, voice acting, writing all of it is art in one form or another

Videogames are art. No doubt.

For those who think that it's not right,
take a look at some "real" art - paintings,
sculptures, music, movies, TV shows, etc.
Don't you see that any videogame translates
something for a person's heart like paintings do?
or like music?
Even the action games like 'Gears of War' or 'Killzone'
transmitt some serious things.

I think that it's not correct to say that videogames
are created for our fingers or our hands or something else.
The are created for our eyes, our hearts and our souls.

So that's why videogames are art.

People seem a bit too spiritual for me when they talk about art...

My type of art is showing creativity, adventure and skill (or just pure talent, sometimes). Essentially Video Games are creative, often adventurous and (some of them need) skill. A video game such as Halo 3 is art because you are developing a unique storyline (art is pretty much anything unique, now that I think about it), nice characters and vehicles with a balanced gameplay in mind (I think, I don't play it much).

Battlefield is an art, seeking to fulfill the gap of realism in games. The art of strategy, of complexity, of teamwork are all involved in this video game.

Then there's the game of say, Age of Empires. That's art. The recreation (which is unique for RTS's, lol) of battles fought hundreds of years ago, El Cid, Joan of Arc, Ghangis Khan, the Crusades, the New World, the Sioux, Iroquois, Aztecs, the whole sense of it is involved in it. The art of Age of Empires is simply the art of what was involved so many years ago. Even Age of Mythology was an art made from an art, it's uniqueness comes from the fact that it had it's own storyline with the same characters (with minor relation to the actual story) with an intriguing way of playing with all the myths talked about thousands of years ago.

Yeah, games are art, as I already said I think anything properly unique about it is, and it's very cool to see some things for what they were meant to be, but the best way to show it is to make you feel it (which is the best art without a doubt, it's all about hitting you, the whole point of it), make you know what it's for.

Video games somewhere are art, it's very hard to make it and it's so good when you can make such games as uncharted or so, where everything is so natural and even the moves look normal! You're sure highly skilled when you can make it! and too create a story for it is also something you could assign to art, because aren't bookwrighters also artists? I think they are!

Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way to affect the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.

This is what wikipedia says about it, and yea video games do have some effect, they sure looks nice and it gives me the feeling of wow, that you could make such a nice game! I think the little things in videogames are art, like how they make the storyline, the reality, the looks etc..
