Background:
I drew this in 45minutes during math class which is why it is on graph paper. I'm not in any classes for drawing, or even an art class. Sure I doodle every so often but nothing seriously like this. I did not trace it, I DID draw it. It is a copy from the album Plastic Beach by the Gorillaz. It seems i'm only able to draw well, if i see it. I'm not able to draw off the top of my head, any tips on doing that?

But then it fails to turn out the way it was suppose to because i begin to forget what i saw, i have a bad memory you see, which is why i need to see something to draw it.

Same for me when I do my own drawings.

Try fragmenting the thing, then? If only there were those handy layers IRL. Picture things in layers. Look at one aspect (with the previous picture), like the jaw line, hair, or hand or the torso, then draw that. Then think up the picture again, it might have something different with it, but it still might be good.

Then do it piece by piece.

graph paper

I love that stuff! Only thing I draw on these days... Unless it's a serious drawing. Great for doodling and practicing.
That's the thing, i can see it in my head, perfectly, how it will look.
But then it fails to turn out the way it was suppose to because i begin to forget what i saw, i have a bad memory you see, which is why i need to see something to draw it.

Great artists need;
*A great imagination
*The ability to draw the stuff they imagine

Otherwise thinkers would be artists...

I'm working on another drawing btw, another copy, it's going to be http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=bleach%20rukia&order=9&offset=216#/d1dnmy1

I figured it looked simple to draw (I probably shouldve tried to challenge myself more...), i'll post it as soon as i finish...

Bleach character aren't that hard to draw, but they're well animated.
It's a cool anime...But I stand by my suggestion; realistic drawing!

The outlines were pretty easy to draw...the shading on the other hand is killing me haha...spent like the past hour tryin to shade correctly/fix small things that were wrong that i drew...like i messed the hand up...

Sorry for the bad picture...took it with my phone because i do not have a scanner like some people...if you can't really see it, i can try to take a better picture in the morning, but atm my shadow will be in the pic no matter what heh...but that was like an hour and half of drawing total...
Literally about 30min getting the outline correct and then an hour to shade lol...

The picture's okay, it's the model I don't like.
It's well reproduced but I think that the first drawing's shading was better.
In any case, don't give up, you've got some talent.
But always keep in mind that reproduction is the easiest path. I don't mean to be harmfull at all; I started improving my technique when someone actually criticised me (Dan). If poeple only told you that you were good, you wouldn't get better, or wouldn't feel the need to ^^.
So keep it up!!

What I enjoy doing is draw a squiggle and look at it. Move the paper around until you see something then go for it. It's fun and it keeps the creative juices floating.
