It doesn't seem like a new company will arise from nowhere, but i think its possible if one of them went under that a game making company like Rockstar would try and maybe make a new console, though i doubt Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft would go under, or stop making consoles. At least not soon.

Sony is dying a bit but it isn't ending any time soon... I don't think anyone is brave enough to come out with an independant console right now (or has anywhere near the money to compete with of those 3) eventually one may buy out the other 2 but for a while atleast I think those 3 are going to be the only competitors on the video game market

Most likely. Right now XBox, Sony, and Nintendo all have niches in the gaming market which they fill quite well, and that has cemented their positions. Also, the sheer production capability required to create an emerging system makes it highly impractical for any new consoles to come from outside of these companies.

Not only does the development take so much time and money, but you also have to submit your software to the game publishers so that designers can create their code to be compatible and with each of these three having such a corner on the market the likelihood of things changing drastically are slim at best.

My only prediction would be to see Xbox fall by the wayside a bit as almost all of their games are also available for PC.(this is also how I play XBox only titles, my PC and a gaming controller) Sony has many proprietary IPs and they have the manufacturing and product base to remain a major player for a long time to come, as does Nintendo.

No another console won't have any success...The Wii gave a new gameplay style but it is unique...a new console will probably have the same controllers as X-box or PS3...Soooo what is the point in taking out a new console? just the colour or the name of it will differ...gameplay style controllers...will be the same so there is no point in getting a new console...Just upgrades will occur.

I agree with this, there's no point in making a new console, but i think that the old ones will get upgraded etc etc, just for the money.. I think that there will be a ps4 or a wii2 in the future and just like mrwalker82 said, that the xbox360 will fall..

One thing I see is that, if the consoles keep improving in processing power, while hovering at around the same price or just increasing a bit, adjusting for inflation...

Sooner or later, the consoles may end up being a way to create an extraordinarily cheap supercomputer for scientific uses--simply hook up each console to create a distributed grid of computing (think SETI or folding@home)

If that happens...well, the company (intel?) that makes the processor will obviously start pumping out more of those for the scientists--and because if they start pumping out more of that, they'll have to cut on other stuff, which might effect...other stuff (like maybe screwing over those computers with intergrated graphics even more due to not making a better version)

...am I getting too theoretical/philosophical here?

Anyways, I think...that each console currently occupies its own niche. AFAIK (read: barely any knowledge), the xbox should cost less than the PS3, with less processing power...and the Wii is more...casual/family.
The Wii caters to the family and such, the xbox in the middle, and the PS3 to serious gamers who want >9000 dots per square inch of resolution.

Depends where the market shifts--if the majority of people want just some casual game and don't care about the looks and such, as long at isn't say, 16 or 8-bit or something like that--then I think the PS3 will fall for example...

Note: I don't really own any consoles (only a Wii, and don't use it much.)

Too late?

It hasn't always been a trio of Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony

I lol'd at Sega's attempts in the past.

I think it doesn't matter if it's always like this, Microsoft and Sony both have all they need to keep up with anyone that even attempts to make a new console. They both have huge amounts of players, I don't understand why people even attempt to bring up Xbox720s or PS4s because it isn't going to happen within the next 15 years.

The Wii, in my opinion, is a great console for something different (the motion sensor controllers). But I think as the price on Xbox's Kinect lowers (it's like a Wii, except it uses picture to track the motion) more people will turn to that for the family games. That isn't to say that Wii's won't still be around for Mario and all of those other Nintendo-only titles

Bottom line: Microsoft and Sony are here to stay, I don't see anyone else being able to step up when there are so many people that already have their consoles. Even if a new console comes out, (whether it's Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, or a newer company who makes it), I'm not going to dump my $300 Xbox just to switch over to it. And I'm sure the millions of other people who own them aren't going to

This is a world where businesses can fall and rise as easily as nations have over the years. I do predict that eventually, these three video game powerhouses shall meet their end, maybe because of their deposing by another party? or of video games eventually falling out of style? (Lord have mercy, let them NOT) Immortality of anything, let alone a man-made corporation has never been achieved, so who's to say that Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo will be given this divine blessing?

Let us enjoy the games we have now and live peacefully in our world. Long live the second millenia of the Common Era, the Golden Age of Gaming
