Phoenix, Coldplay, Matt & Kim, Franz Ferdinand and MGMT are all bands of this genre. Post who you think I should look for in the CD section.
And post some bands that would fit well with these! :P

I could name some more. Do they have to be Pop Bands?

Modest mouse isn't alt-pop-rock, they're more indie-alt-rock. Also, they're older stuff is hard-up indie that makes Pavement sound like Hannah Montana.

Out of the bands listed so far, my most favorite would be Modest Mouse, though they don't have as much of the pop element as, say, Coldplay(another of my favorites).

Seriously though, if you've never given older Modest Mouse a try, you should. Dramamine, Trucker's Atlas, Polar Opposites, Heart Cooks Brain, the hi-fi version of Beach Side Property, Sleepwalkin', Interstate-8, Teeth Like god's Shoeshine, Bankrupt on Selling, Custom Concern, Breakthrough, Novocain Stain, Edit the Sad Parts, Night on the Sun, and every other song on Building Nothing out of something, The Lonesome Crowded West, This is a Long Drive for someone with Nothing to Think About, and Moon and Antarctica are all mind-blowingly amazing.

. . . think I'm done now, lol.

Heard ALt, listen to him. I came here to say the same exact thing, seeing how whimsy suggested it, but since it's done, enjoy!

Ha! So very true, Modest mouse used to be true blue Indies, now they dawdle in alternative/indie.
As for the rest, Coldplay's one of my favorite band ever. I'm more of an alt/progressive fan so I'll go with the ever masterful steven wilson, and oldschool Genesis.

Steven Wilson solo: hardcore psychedelic/progressive
Steven Wilson in porcupine tree: Psychedelic/progressive
Steven Wilson in No-man: Symphonic progressive rock
Steven Wilson in Blackfield, and that may be more adapted to this thread: Alternative

Now, you must be very selective with Genesis since they started to be bad around 1975. All albums before that year are incredible though; only for progressive fans.

Their second album with Collins as the lead, Wind and Wuthering, was also great. Give it a listen.

I have that album too, it's one of their last success, along with ''A trick of the tail''. After that, it becomes totally horrible; Abacab, duke, invisible touch, we can't dance, etc...
