Wow you guys. Kabul is the Capital of Afghanistan, and it was once a beautiful city. When the US invaded Afghanistan, they bombed Kabul and basically destroyed the city. He is no longer a supporter because he has seen the horrors of war.
First off you can tell that those aren't even pictures of the same place. Secondly way to explain the purpose of your thread.(sarcasm) And Kevin, only those who have actually been in war have seen it. I doubt Samy is a veteran or someone who lives in either Afghanistan or Iraq, so let's pick a better reason to decide not to support what our troops are doing.
Yeah, I was wondering if it was true. If you look at the very back of the first picture, the ground doesn't continue. I assume that it has a staircase, so you can't see the back. But if it is a staircase then that's elevated.
Samy don't forget that it was the civil war in Afghanistan between the Taleban and the Mujahideen that destroyed most of Kabul back in 1994, and the Soviets before them in the 80s. The 2001 bombing campaign undoubtedly destroyed a lot of infrastructure, but it's important to remember how bad a shape Afghanistan was in when we got there. 4th poorest nation on Earth. I'm all for peace, but don't make it look like ISAF destroyed a paradise.
You're right terrible OP so let me re-phrase my points; or create points for that matter.
I can't find any evidence for the picture to be false as it appears to have been reported by th UN.
The Wars in the Middle East have cost us Trillions of Dollars and yielded little results and it continues to cost us 720 million dollars a day. The money would be better used in the education system or, even, for humanitarian work in the Middle East that would be more effective than military measures.
That's what Mchrystal was trying to do before Obama fired him. His troop surge wasn't to defeat the Taleban, but to use the troops with the ground already taken to rebuild the country. Kind of like UN peacekeepers with bigger guns. The problem is that there simply isn't enough local manpower involved in the intiative. The strategy is based on petraeus' in Iraq, but the key difference there was the locals. Since most Afghans think we're going to be out in a few years why help us rebuild when they know whatever is created will be destroyed by the Taleban, and those who helped in their construction will likely be executed. A sad state of affairs. It's such a necessary war, yet such an unwinnable one.

One downside: The Taliban, they don't want aide. People do, but people don't have guns to shoot at the Taliban, or the balls to do it. The Taliban will inevitably kill off everyone.
Look, war is war. Destruction is an inevitable part of war, and it can be rebuilt. For the moment, it can't, especially in the places where the Taliban maintain a shadow government, and with Karzai sitting pretty in their pockets, we will NEVER get anything done. The Taliban will need to be utterly exterminated, down to the very last, for us to be able to make that city pretty again.

Yet if enough people were well educated the numbers of the Taliban would fall as well as their power. Also; I believe you're over exaggerating the hold the Taliban have on the area as well as the reason that they are angry, which is inevitably the US.

War is war but, unfortunatly, the purpose of our involvement in this war is grey at best and personally I believe it boils down to our oil addiction. The country needs to settle its own problems or else it will never be stable.
Different perspective? Like I said I can't find any site on the internet that claims the picture is false although if you have a link that says otherwise I wouldn't argue.

I don't need a link to explain why there are mountains in one and not in the other. You can clearly see that. Besides, the perspective is the same if you look at the ledge compared to the background.

Name one counter insurgency operation which has ever succeeded by ''exterminated to the very last''. The Taleban are Afghans. The solution is to get them on side, not kill them. That's how and why Iraq succeeded. That's how and why the Troubles in Northern Ireland came to an end. If we don't learn the lessons of history we are doomed to repeat them.
