Hey guys, I was wondering, what do you have to do to make a game that people will want to play every level and have fun?
does it need a story?
character customization?
level ups?
special powers?
interesting levels?
uniqueness?

Let me know what you guys think
Thanks

Hmm I think adding a multiplayer would make people keep playing though it doesn't work with all games.

Pretty much what you listed there... also I enjoy it if every character (if there is more than one) has their own back story rather than just a random mindless drone with a bunch of random stats and no reason for them (I am thinking RPG like games though) upgradeable weapons are always nice but I think it is best if its not just +1 damage or something it actually needs to do something different every couple levels otherwise its the same weapon but its just trying to keep up with enemies and their ever increasing stats/abilities what have you. I also liked the weapon level up system in the Ratchet and Clank games (kind of old but really they are the only game I have ever seen do that...) hard to implement into a flash game though I am not all that sure it is what you're asking for... hmm... Multiplayer is not a necessity for me personally if the game has a good story line then it is worth my time to play it alone. I think character customization (in the way of looks atleast) isn't all that important, weapons I think are but if the character looks BA to begin with then I don't really care if I can change him myself or not. If you do make customizable looks for characters though put some way to be able to change the look personally I get bored of the way a character looks if I am the one that made it.

awesome graphics, level-ups, upgrades, special powers and interesting levels is what i like the most.
uniqueness and character customation isn't a good idea, it takes houres to make a character, and only the real game-make professinals can be good at uniqueness

In addition to the above - flexibility - That is, when a game has enough interesting additional challenges and options that would make going through it again more rewarding - for simple action games it might be some list of challenges or 'badges' to be earned (for skill, speed, collecting all the stars or finishing a level without using a special weapon). For RPGs or any game which is more story-oriented, flexibility would be a non-linear plot, having many side stories, or a map in which the player doesn't have to pass every location to finish the game - those are exactly the things which makes me go through a game once more (or more than once) to explore all the stuff I didn't get to see in the first run.
Another way to add flexibility to a game is to include a "level editor" - to allow players to add more content to it. For some games, a "random level/map generator" is also a great option.

If you are making a level-based game, then I'd say a convincing and interesting storyline would make it addictive.

That's one of the least important things in my opinion and the last thing that would draw you to the game for longer than the game is made for.

Don't forget level design and originality.

Some things that give good replay value:

-Decent gameplay. This is required for people to check back
-Multiplayer. Big investment, but if you continually update it the chance of it dying down is minimal
-Level Editor/Sandbox. This creates a whole new way to "feel" the gameplay, and if you can share the level with others, even better.
-A different setting every time you play. You can randomize this.
-Different characters/areas. This way, people will play through the game with each thing at least once to check it out.

Well, IMO, a game needs 1. uprages 2. sometimes a character selection 3. Good levels and story 4. Knights or something old stuff 5. You could think of how old the player(s) must be to play it

And so on and so on.
I'm quite sure, that that makes the game good.
Different people want different games.
