Actually, the Tavern is intended for the off topic type threads. WERP is intended for serious discussion and typically centers around politics and religion, hence the very fitting title it now holds.
Basically, what MRWalker82 said. The world events forum really isn't a forum for off topic discussion. It is geared towards more serious discussions about world events, politics, religion, etc. If you are looking for more light hearted and off topic discussion, check out the Tavern. I think that might be more of what you are looking for.
