When you face someone who just can't understand, or probably won't do it, ignore him Quite a good advice, uh?
Well it's always worth a shot, someone who looks ignorant at first might be affected by your words and change. But will still remain ignorant at some level. I say always try before you judge.
Also ignorance is bliss that's why children are always happy with their world.
TV and public school destroys that innocence pretty damn fast. And even so teenagers like me are so lucky, we don't have to worry about money, bills, jobs. I mean when you become an adult life starts to suck.
As far as the maxim you present while it is applicable in many cases, it is not a universal maxim. Often times 'idiots' can be educated from a stance of truthful and civil debate. It is when we begin to resort to insults and opinionated conversation that we lose the opportunity to enlighten our peers.

I always find that children are at their happiest when they are learning and exploring. As such, they are lifting the veil of ignorance and replacing it with understanding and comprehension. Every time one of my children realizes that he understands something which he didn't previously he is so excited. His eyes light up and he very obviously expresses his delight that he finally figured something out. Therefore I disagree that ignorance is bliss and hold that one of our primary and most basic drives is to learn, to understand, and to share our knowledge.

I think that's probably the most intelligent comment I have ever heard from a teenager. Just thought I'd say that.

I agree, but the fact is what they learn behind you. Actually, the verb is wrong: the problem is what they imitate: racism, bad words, in my country fascism. Do you understand what I mean? I'm not very clear sometimes...

An idiot starts his conversation with insults and whatever you'll tell him, he'll just ignore him; that's why the maxim is right for me
