My favorite MMO, is Fiesta Online, a MMORPG.

And RuneScape is kinda good. If you don't mind hackers.

And if you want to pay. WoW, I personally don't like WoW.

They all have a semi-rpg element to them, some more than most...lots of customization in all of them.

All free, but some require downloads...darkspace is small, NF and HIS are around 1 gig each, tinywarz is javascript.

Guild wars is personally my favorite, Can't wait for Guild Wars 2. P.S. you have to buy the game but no monthly fees or anything else
P.S.S the game costs like 40$ so it's not too expensive
