OK, here's the news: NASA announced that four Coronal Mass Ejections were released from the sun. They also announced that the CMEs were large enough so that the Aurora Borealis (the "Northern Lights", focused around the Northern Hemisphere) could show in the atmosphere. Some of these electromagnetic storms are harmful to electronic devices, but this storm seems to be moderate, after being measured by a magnetometer in Colorado. I think this is a once in a lifetime experience - to be able to see the Aurora Borealis.
Not particularly. I have personally seen aurora borealis in Washington state, Oregon, Montana, and Utah. It is however truly wondrous and fascinating, no matter how many times you see it.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I am thinking that the deep freeze at the start of the year, the summer heat wave, and the two Mag. 7 earthquakes might've been rehearsals for 2012 or something. Now, some people are predicting that a big giant CME is gonna maul the planet in 2012.
