ooo god i dont know i like total wars for upgradeability and the graphics but age of empires has single units so you can keep track of them instead of fighting 100s against 100s lagging up ur computer
I would go to Age of Empires because it is easier to manage. But people who like controlling large armies and are strategy freaks should play Total War games.
neh AoE was OK, but i didn't like it as much as the Total War games! i started out with their Rome series, p0wned it, got Medieval w/ expansions, p0wned that too, and am currently looking to buy the third one, Empire, and maybe Napoleon. i am a micromanagement freak, and love to see my units progress as they march across my enemies home territory. it is also fun to add a city-building aspect to it, as well as the naval comat, which i've played on Empire, WHICH IS EPIC!
but that is from your strategy freak SirNoob, not sure what everyone else thinks =/
I've had more fun in Rome than in age of empires. I actually need to control my units in TW whereas in AoE it's just mass musketeers/artys and steamroll the base. But aoe still has a kickass story.(err, the historical stories up until aoe3. Aoe 3 had good chapters, but some of them were just silly). The only fault in R:TW for me is all the crap you have to go through to upgrade units (for one damn city!!). I'll need to play the newer Total wars before I can truly say which series is better.
Age of Empires. Requires better resource management, creating more strategic positions as well as strategies.
Terrain means more, forest = world, caves = gold, mountain = defense, it all adds up and is required for a successful play in the most competitive matches.
Age of Empires is definately more complex, and of course competitive, that I've no doubt.
Don't get me wrong - Total War is good, but it lacks proper control over everything you have, with Age of Empires / Mythology it's "Town Center + 5 villagers, okay, GO!" Basically that lol, Age of Mythology is very different tho
