A properly trained soldier with an StG44 had an improved tactical repertoire, in that he could effectively engage targets at longer ranges than with an MP 40, but be much more useful than the Kar 98k in close combat, as well as provide covering fire like a light machine gun. It was also found to be exceptionally reliable in the extreme cold of the Russian winter.
StoÃtruppen wore the standard German army tunic, with puttees and the stahlhelm; there was no special uniform for them. They carried rifles (which they rarely used), clubs, knives, many grenades, extra ammunition pouches and knapsacks
Apart from the weapons, a rare Sturmmann wore a bullet-proof metal visor in front of his stahlhelm and very occasionally, a special breastplate with segmented armor for extra maneuverability
