This year has seen the first ever hosting of the FIFA World Cup in an African country. Many would agree that it has passed smoothly.

But the debate I want to begin indulgence in is what the value of football is to you.

I've been a small supporter of my father's hometown team for over a year. He follows it passionately since they were promoted twice in two seasons. We've even been to several live matches and together experienced the atmosphere of group chanting and cheering.

Football is enjoyed worldwide by millions of people who pay huge amounts of money to watch the exciting realistic games played live with full adrenaline.

But there are major problems with football.

Firstly there is often huge negativity when a player does not perform to an "expected" standard. There is often an unbalanced view of the team based on their performance and if one player seems to have underperformed, then everybody goes on to say that everybody else had a poor game. Vice Versa if the team wins.

Secondly football has the least solid mechanics of any sport that I can immediately think of. Decisions are not black and white (A makes B happen) and this leads to monumental human errors that seem to be happening more and more.

Secondly there is a lack of technology to support the human referee who has to account for so many things during a match and is pressured to make all decisions correct. Many fans share the unfair frustration of verdicts that are clearly wrong.

Thirdly i'm worried that the business element overrides the recreational purpose that football was originally created for. We blame players for losing and criticise them heavily and personally because they get paid so much that we will not tolerate failure.

This debate is about football in general, but I wanted to touch on three main points.

1: Do you believe that football is a fair sport, or has enough fixed mechanics for it to actually be classed as game?

2: Do you support a football team in your country, and if so how much and why?

3: What is the future of football - how is it going to move forward?

Lastly I understand that soccer is not largely popular in America, so for the majority of users please feel committed to discussing about American Football.

I hope FIFA and other big soccer tournaments start using cameras for game fairness. Many don't understand why they don't do it (I don't either).

I personally like the fact that humans still make the decisions in the sport and haven't been replaced by technology.
So what If the ref makes a bad call? If he disallows a goal that just adds more tension into the game for the team that got disallowed to try harder to score again.
And who doesn't like calling the referee a wanker when he makes fail calls? xD

1: Do you believe that football is a fair sport, or has enough fixed mechanics for it to actually be classed as game?

Part of the game is bouncing back from the refs bad calls. It makes the players try harder and play carefully, in the case of an undeserved card, using more skill than force. Also, refs make mistakes in other sports too.

2: Do you support a football team in your country, and if so how much and why?

I live in the US, so I don't have much of a team to support. Our defense is just awful, and the rest of the team isn't much better.

3: What is the future of football - how is it going to move forward?

FIFA has decided to use goal-line technology in the future after all the mistakes in the World Cup. Also, I believe refs learn from their mistakes so the reffing will keep improving.

I support Germany, because they are clearly the best, and also Bayern Munchen and Barcelona.

Football is life.
The greatest lifestyle here in Argentina.
People may kill each other for football!
And that's awesome!

ulimitedPower: You can cheat in all sports and activities.

But it's to what degree of ease one can get away with it.

SosolidClaws: Football is the best sport in the world. No questions asked. No unfairnes involved.

Humans are imperfect, therefore any game where a human dictates mechanics cannot possibly be fair.

Deth666: I don't consider it physical enough, in the sense that all you can do is knock the ball away from the guy and/or trip them.

Football is a physical sport, but I see where you are coming from.

Football is about raw skill and instinct combined with magnificently talented execution. There is very little time to form immediate strategies in most on pitch situations.

Football referees should never be replaced, but I think the pressure put on them can be reduced dramatically if there was a soft cushion to fall back should they feel or become indecisive.

Football can be a very personal sport, especially to the fans.

Football tickets cost a lot, and some fans travel miles expecting to see a reasonably well balanced game in terms of fair decision making.

It's majorly frustrating for the fans when they can clearly see an easy decision that has not been made - and there is no excuse for it.

Or is it coming to the point where we now expect bad decisions to be made - and ready to chant verbal abuse to the referee?

And are we in fact surprised when decisions are all fair?

1: Do you believe that football is a fair sport, or has enough fixed mechanics for it to actually be classed as game?

Of course not, we have countless examples of fraud, as the crown of France, where the drug came to Brazilian players, right here in Brazil there is a mafia corrupts championships and defraud the results...

2: Do you support a football team in your country, and if so how much and why?

No, because I do not like to take a position on a team, here in Brazil you may die because not twists for the right team, if you find yourself opposing fans in the street they will smash you...barbarians

3: What is the future of football - how is it going to move forward?

This was created to induce the masses and the people close their eyes to the slips of the government, here in Brazil, "by Coincidence", the elections for president are in the same year that the cup games, and elections for mayors are in the same year that the Olympics ... this resource will continue to function as people enter a state of frenzy and do not know of anything else to twist, comment and brag about their beloved teams ... forgetting to family, society and civil duty.

I don't think they should.
The referee should call it as he sees it, if the players don't agree, so what, they get paid enough so why don't they just shut the hell up and continue playing without complaining for once.
I don't want to see football full of all different technology to rule the game, it would become boring.
Especially with the pause in the game to replay the decision, game needs to flow, if he makes a wrong call, apologize, nothing more nothing less.
I know how it feels for my team to be on the receiving end, but why change the rules?
Referees make the decisions not computers.
