I just read through a thread about Russia potentialy being able to become anther super power and continue its arms race with the USA, the thread was a great idea but lacked depth and creativity so im going to give it a shot.
DisclaimerThis is all fiction and a work of my own mind, please don't be scared that this will ever happen because it is very unlikely it will.
Ever since the Soivet Union collapsed Russia has become weak and the tension between the United States of America and Russia has decreased to a point that the two countries are Allies and even work on research projects togather. Russia still has the potential to wreck havic on the world, there are a few generations that remember the ways of communism and some of them are fanatics about it, communism came in when Russia was at its weakest and created something magnificent and strong something to be fear hence the cold war.
There are a few possiable scenarios but to keep this thread short i will be nameing just one that could happen to bring Russia back on the worlds political playing feild.
There could be a military coup that would over throw Russia current government, if this was to happen you would expect them to be allied to the old government type and to the Soviet Union. When Russia was a super power alot of nuclear warhead's were made and put in silos, now since the collapse alot of these nukes have been destroyed by the new goverment but there has to be still afew around enough to to gain the attention of the USA, aslo there are countless amounts of weapons that are stockpiled from the old government so this coup could potentially work. Where would this coup gain funding? There is potential that China would fund the coup as they are long time friends with the Soviet Union and are a super power, but I beleive that this is very unlikely due to the reason that dueing the friendship of the USSR and China, China has always wanted to be view as the world leader of communism, but in the worlds current state bring back a old parnter could very well give China the edge on the worlds battle grounds and China would be viewed as a more serious player. If China funded this coup and it was sucessful China could use Russia as a pawn or a puppet, but the question arises what happens if Russia does not want to be controlled? Well China would just simpley pull all its funding from Russia, with out China funding and helping develop Russia is nothing.
Once Russia has been over thrown what would be the plans of the new administration? One would assume that Russia new government would want to start were it left off so you would see a great increase in production for weapons, Russia would be turned into a war machine.
How long would it take for Russia to stabalise again? Assumeing that China has been very supportive with money and resources even troops to control riots and the re-attempt to stop this government Russia would more then likey become stable in 2-4 years.
What about the other states of the Soviet Union? Well once Russia has stablised they would fund futher coups to destabilze governments that boarder with them, or they would re-invade these previouse counties and establish communism again.
What would be the intentions of Russia against the USA and it's Allies? Well most countries that are involed in the middle east have problems with terrorism including morden day Russia, I assume that Russia would take a even harder stance on the Cells that oppose them but would fund terroriest cells in the USA and its Allies to make them continue there focus on internal affairs.
A few other countries have the capability to do so, I would consider Russia to be a bit unstable due to there history. Russia could start another cold war but what will make them? War/fighting in these times is basically nuclear warfare. If Russia get the calculations wrong, they could end up the rest of the world up.
I'm not a peace fanatic or a hippie, but I would vote for permanent nuclear disarming.
Here is a 'fictional' depiction that you haven't raised, yet. What if China is playing the USA by loaning our government so much money that can't be paid back? China could theoretically demand collateral as satisfying this debt. Let's suppose this collateral is in the form of Pacific air fields, navy and army bases? All it would take to force the US out of the Mediterranean Sea would be a coalition of Russia and Iran, for instance, to seal the deal and level the playing field. * Even though this argument is fictional, I still want to know how the government in Washington is repaying the very real debt it owes to China.
