I never did get what those red thumbpins on the top few threads were for. I'm pretty sure that it's to keep them at the top, but I really don't know why.
Those are to distinguish regular threads from stickies. Stickies have thumbtacks, regular threads don't. Just to make it look like the thread is actually posted up there to remain in place.
