I've encountered one shiny in all my life, and I'm pretty sure I've played more than most of you. I assume this based on my age and my addiction of pokemon (Started to play in the times of R/B/Y)
As all great masters tend to do, I now devote my pokemon playtime to being an IV breeder.

As for your goal, I for one find it pretty futile given the fact that shinies don't have higher chances of having better stats.
All that work for a simple color change?! Well, good luck to you...
