I was just curious if any of you have heard of Futsal...which is a type of indoor soccer that's played on a court the size of a half basketball court. If you have, what do you like about it? I think it needs more publicity in the states, it seems like the rest of the soccer world knows what it is.

I have played Futsal a few times.

Many famous footballers have played futsal (e.g. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Ibrahimovic, Figo) when they were children. They say that Futsal provided them with the basis to becoming some of the world's best players.
Futsal is very popular in Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Iran.

I think the United states are in the top 20 teams according to the ELO-based rankings.

Wow, glad to know some people know about it, I knew that we were in the top 20, but it just seems like a sport that kind of gets ignored by the media. I know I wouldn't have known about it if my friend's dad didn't own the league in our area.

Never heard of it here, at all. Maybe I'm just a sheltered Canadian LOL

So basically it's just soccer played on a smaller field? :P

well yes and no, it's played on a court and it has two 20 minute half's instead of soccer's 2 45 min halfs. The ball is smaller and the shoes are made of canvas or soft leather. It's also 5 v 5 instead of 11 v 11. I know bc my friend's dad is having us create the first futsal magazine in the US

Interesting. Sounds like a lot more action.

I'll have to look into this, it sounds fun. Thanks for the info

It's loads of fun! It's also more fast paced and easier to watch since the court is so small. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

rules

here are the rules if you wanna check them out! I hope it works...I've never posted a link before.

I'm from Argentina and here Futsal gets some attention from the media but not as much as regular soccer.A lot of soccer players learned how to get rid of rivals on just a couple of moves by playing Futsal.

Sounds just like regular 5 a-side football, played that sort in school all the time on the basketball courts, some had goal 'holes' some just used bags and jumpers to make the goal xD
Normal sized ball right?

Seeing as football......er......soccer here in the United states, isn't very popular, it would seem odd that a smaller version of tht would excist here. Does sound like alot of fun though.

the ball is actually 2 inches smaller and a bit heavier, but it's probably similar to 5 a side football

Futsal is to soccer like badminton is to tennis, at least that's how I'd think of it.

Then there's the game played in certain SouthEast Asian countries that looks like a cross between futsal and badminton... that's crazy. But I don't know the name of it. Any takers?
