Does anyone know anything about this? Apparently Sarkozy said that they were forming 'shanty-towns' that were rife with unrest, drug rings and prostitution, but a lot of the Roma peoples that were sent back to Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey were legal EU citizens (which, if I'm not mistaken, allows for free immigration). Are his claims credible?
Is the French government violating their rights? Given the fact that France also banned the religious freedom of girls to wear burkas in school, is anyone else concerned about what's happening in that country?
I admit I don't know the full story, so what's your opinion?
From BBC news, "It showed the authorities had been instructed to target Roma camps, rather than deal with migrants on a case-by-case basis, as the French migration minister and the minister for Europe had assured the European Commission.
The deliberate targeting of an ethnic minority, if proven, would violate EU anti-discrimination laws and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights."
There must be some loophole within the EU to allow France to deport other EU "citizens." France should look to fix the problem, not sweep it under the rug. But, I'm not familiar with their economical situation, either.

I think it's right that they mustn't wear burkas in school. It's a discrimination of the women... btw, it's not written in the koran that they have to wear burkas or a head cloth...
legal EU citizens (which, if I'm not mistaken, allows for free immigration)
It allows free immigration only the first three months. After that time, immigrants must prove that they have a job or enough money to live. They also must have a health insurance. That means that they mustn't put out the social system. And last but not least, the immigrants mustn't come into conflict with the law...
BUT France has to prove every individual case before they may deport the immigrants.

I suppose, but the EU is threatening some sort of action unless France changes its policies by Oct 18th. *shrugs* For now, we'll have to wait and see.
I wish Britain was as quick to deport illegal immigrants as France. We get stuck with more of the 'suck-off the economy' type than the 'I may not be here legally but I'm going to earn my way here' type.

Personally, I don't like burkas. I feel it's an injustice to women. However, if it's a cultural or religious symbol of THEIR choice, they should have that right. I feel like they need to be the ones in control, rather than have that rule forced on them. I guess being without one would be like going to school without a shirt or a bra. And if that rule is enforced, the floodgates might very well be opened, and other religious symbols might be taken away. It's one thing if you want to accessorize -- it's another if it's a holy symbol of faith (whether or not I approve of it).

Okay, thanks for the clarification. I didn't know the exact details of that. I agree that France would have to prove individual cases. I imagine it's part of the law, too?

You can't say if it's really the choice of the kid/teenager. Also the burka prevents that you know who's the person under it... And as I said, it's not written in the Koran that they have to wear burkas... btw, if you're a woman and you want to go (for example) to Morocco, you also have to wear a head cloth... But I don't wanna start a religous debate about burkas in that thread^^

I do agree with you, and there's definitely (I might even say often) the chance that the girls aren't the once initiating the requirement. It's just a thought. ^^ (I don't want to change the subject either, lol.)
I read that it's part of the EU-law.
Well, that makes sense. I admit I don't know as much (read: anything) about the EU as I should.
