Could be for better or for worse.

What books or movies -- or other media -- do you think have inspired or contributed to social or political reforms? Or have had other effects?

I don't know if this should be in the 'world events' topic or not, given the potential for debate, but meh. =/

Examples could be Uncle Tom's Cabin, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Mein Kampf, etc.

Oh, forgot examples for movies.
Um...

The Battleship Potemkin, Star Wars (seriously, this counts), the Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, Triumph of the Will, Metropolis...etc...

And, needless to say, why and how do you think it was influential?

The Bible. and The Blind Side. One of my favorite movies, I read the book also. True stories always mean the most.

I've still got to read that. *adds to list*
It's really somehow pathetic when my book list only gets larger, not smaller. >.>

I'd say Snow White. Not my favorite, but it was good, and set the bar high for future feature-length animated films

The Outsiders. It basically set the stage for all books and movies about teen struggle.

Oh. And The Hobbit and the entire LOTR series. LOTR for both.

Cmon, man, it's LOTR.

I gotta go with Dune as being one of the must reads of the science fiction genre.

Man, was Dune a dense book.
But it was worth it.

Not sure about the most influential books, but I'm a huge fan of Anne Rice/A.N. Roquelare. I love her style of writing. She is a very descriptive author, not only when describing places, but with her characters as well. Through the course of reading her you really get a strong sense that you understand her characters which makes reading her very interesting.

Obviously religious texts have been enormously influential, as well as many scientific publications. These works have had profound impacts on our species and have inspired many beliefs as well as opened up our understanding of our world.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien' books have influenced so much into media from their release, you can see that in music, books, movies, games and other stuff in this image-related-modern-world.

Not that sure bout movies but A Clockwork Orange, was a real issue then.
