well from what i read in the 1940's american human resourses went to guatemala and infected ppl with STD like siphillus an such they took prostitutes with such desease and them have relations with prisoners and mental patioants to give them the desease and in turn use the relitivly new penicilen to treat them and hopefully cure them oh and get this the person that found this out was a college student can you beleileve that

so what leads me to say was it worth it after all some STDs are cured through penicillin so was the life of poor inocent ppl with this desease such a travasty i dont think so i think it was worth it scientificly i mean but hey what sciences experiment ever have a perfect 10 out 10 rating right?

Yeah, I saw this news reel. You know what my sentiments are? Screw Guatemala. Shit happens, oh well. The people who did this shit should be the ones apologizing, otherwise it is really a meaningless attention ploy.

Yeah I'm with Walker, nobody really cares. The US just said that as a common courtesy blah blah blah. It Guatemala doesn't accept the apology, then they look like the bad guys. It's something that happened 60 years ago that doesn't affect most people;

What is it with countries always bringing up the past to get apologies xD I mean it doesn't hurt anybody that they did apologize, but there was no need to do it either.

Fixed.

Well America is experimenting. We arent going to infect our own population with syphillus to find a cure, though. No one seems to care about Guatemalan prisoners and mental patients.

My question is: did the Penecillin work? I'm going to guess no, otherwise Obama wouldn't be apoligizing.

I understand that something like this isn't that big of a deal, America's government has always (for lack of a better term) not been on the ball when it comes to making sure everyone knows what's happening.

But I do have one thing to say about the listed posts:

Holocaust? Invasion of Cyprus? Soviet expansion? Among other things...

I'm just saying, people do care about what happened a while ago.

Still no need to apologize for it 60 years down the line, when the same people aren't even in power anymore.

because they think they can change what happened and hopefully learn from it but honestly when does the human race ever learn from anything these days

... ugh! *shiver*
So... much...disease...
That's a little unpleasant, but I guess it's important to acknowledge any wrongdoings...even if you had absolutely nothing to do with it :P

The simple fact is that it worked. Through this study, and studies like it, we can now cure many STDs which were thought uncurable just a few decades ago. Was it moral? Probably not. Is there really any point in apologizing? Not really, especially considering that the overwhelming majority of the guinea pigs are dead, being that this was well over 50 years ago. Not likely the prisoners and mental patients in Guatemala typically live to see 70 or 80 years of age. And best of all, we now have scientific proof on how to not only prevent, but cure these horrible diseases.

I think apologizing potentially can make the situation worse. Maybe not worse but it is a huge risk to admit something like this. Im sure for the most part, Guatemalans weren't even aware of this situation. Now that the situation has been brought to light in this country. Emotionally there is a chance they may blame misfortune or any pessimistic, to this STD situation. Big risk for America! Hope the Guatemalans appreciate honesty!

Sad but true. An apology will dredge up dirt.

Also I would like it noted that people shud perhaps remember that countries STILL do stuff like this, we just wont find out for, say... 50-60 years.
