Discuss the Titans of Video Game Multiplayer! Who's made their biggest mark, who had the most innovation, who deserves to be dubbed king of multiplayer?
A long, long, LONG, time ago, in like 2002, Call of Duty's campaign was recognized as a universally good thing, the blood gulch chronicles were well on their way of success, gears was just a drawing in a notebook, and there was a game called Battlefield 1942. It dominated multiplayer for two years, everyone loved it and it was absolutely unstoppable. It still maintains a large audience in battlefield 2 and its expansion packs, but the release of B2 was hampered by a Titan known as World of Warcraft.
in the same year as WoW, another Titan took the stage, Halo 2. No other console shooter before it could have redefined console multiplayer like good ol' Halo 2. people thought bungie was unstopable, but, Titans will fall, and in 2007, halo 3 shared teh crown with another Titan and a squire, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and in later months, DICE returned with their new sub-franchise; Battlefield: Bad Company.
And so for two years this went on, until in 2009 when Halo and Call of duty both reentered the multiplayer stage. Because Halo 3: ODST was more or less of the same engine and 3 new maps, firefight, and a new campaign, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 reclaimed the title, but not for long. Four months following, DICE tried again for Titan-status, this time, on the console. The result was teh block-buster hit, Battlefield Bad Company 2.
And so the two shared the crown for months. Now there is one true Titan, Halo: Reach, but new titles come to challenge it, DICE-revived Medal of Honor and Treyarch-crafted Black-Ops, later in 2011 Battlefield 3 will release, and even Ubisoft, after limited squire-hood with thier TC titles, is trying for Titanhood with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Only time will tell who is the next Titan of Multiplayer.
