Google Inc. is road-testing cars that steer, stop, and start without a driver. They are trying to help prevent traffic accidents, free up people's time and reduce carbon emmisions.

What do you guys think about this idea that is going to be reality soon?

Pretty cool, I read about it in the paper. Its pretty amazing that they drove all throughout San Fransisco's intricate streets without crashing.

Not the first ones, Volvo is doing alot of work with that and some Japenese companyies as well. There taking what grasshoppers do in swarm to avoid smacking into another and then trying to put that into a car.

While I like the possible safety aspects of this, I love driving. I don't want a robot to drive for me.

It's cool, great news and all, but what's the point?

I'd feel kind of helpless in an accident situation where I wouldn't be able to do anything other than sit there.

I assume there'd be emergency controls, for that though.

In my opinion the safety aspect are amazing for this idea and the ability for such accuracy is pretty outstanding. I do think it would take the "fun" out of driving though.

I've also wondered something about this... So let me set up a small scenario. You have just bought one of these cars and you soon get into an accident. Since you have no control over the vehicle, wouldn't the blame for accidents always be on the companies and not on driver error?

My failing is also getting worse lately. If it had something like a manual override so you could drive the car like you would normally and then switch back to automatic, the idea seems perfect to me.

Volvo is originally were I heard the idea from, but Google was a new one for me. I think it's pretty outrageous how we can take what we learn from animals and insects and use that to make our lives easier.

I've heard of these cars. The only accident that happened to one of them was made by another person.
I wouldn't say it would be safe though. As people have said what if you have an accident and you can't do anything? Maybe they should improve the car functions.

Whenever I see something doing whatever they do by themselves I always feel as if robots are going to take over the world. Stupid sci-fi movies D:

So how do these cars determine speed limits? And as well, how do they stop at traffic lights, stop signs, and follow general rules of the road?

And how do they stay aligned in the proper lane, or even on the right side of the road?

Google has had success full tests and the cars can drive by them selves!

This will hopefully clear up traffic jammes.
