I was in my psychology class when we came to the subject of mental disabilities, one being bipolar. Some of the things talked about were when the person goes manic, they will promise everything, give everything away, and believe they have powers they don't actually have. Here is the wiki on Bipolar disorder.
Here is the part that is really interesting, as well as the one that pretty much sets it apart:
Manic episode Main article: Mania
Mania is the signature characteristic of bipolar disorder and, depending on its severity, is how the disorder is classified. Mania is generally characterized by a distinct period of an elevated, expansive, or irritable mood state. People commonly experience an increase in energy and a decreased need for sleep. A person's speech may be pressured, with thoughts experienced as racing. Attention span is low, and a person in a manic state may be easily distracted. Judgment may become impaired, and sufferers may go on spending sprees or engage in behavior that is quite abnormal for them. They may indulge in substance abuse, particularly alcohol or other depressants, cocaine or other stimulants, or sleeping pills. Their behavior may become aggressive, intolerant, or intrusive. People may feel out of control or unstoppable. People may feel they have been "chosen" and are "on a special mission" or have other grandiose or delusional ideas. Sexual drive may increase. At more extreme phases of bipolar I, a person in a manic state can begin to experience psychosis, or a break with reality, where thinking is affected along with mood.[7] Many people in a manic state experience severe anxiety and are very irritable (to the point of rage), while others are euphoric and grandiose.
To be diagnosed with mania according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), a person must experience this state of elevated or irritable mood, as well as other symptoms, for at least one week, less if hospitalization is required.[8]
It fits him to the letter. So was he mentally ill?
Based on the descriptions I don't think it would have been a bipolar disorder. What is believed to be likely true of the guy is that he intentionally got himself arrested and sentenced to a death penalty to become a martyr for his beliefs because he truly believed he was a the messiah. There were stories of a previous man who lived who likely would have given him the idea that the true messiah had to die to prove he was the real thing. I would say even if this much is true this indicates a delusional state on par with many cult leaders in recent history.
If you don't believe he was the son of God, then you'd have to believe he was crazy. If you do believe he was the son of God, then you'd have to be crazy.
If you don't believe he was the son of God, then you'd have to believe he was crazy. If you do believe he was the son of God, then you'd have to be crazy.
I like this very much... and there is truth in dem der wordz.
I disagree entirely with this belief. Here are some reasons why:
A man with leprosy came and knelt before Him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." Jesus reached out and touched the man, "I am willing," He said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. Matthew 8:2-3 First off, would so many people put their trust in an insane man. Would a dying man put his complete faith, his life, in the hands of a madman? The bible, which much of it has been historically proven, shows that Jesus had real power, and wasn't suffering form mania.
Also, Jesus had regular debates with the pharisees. These were the most educated and "smarted" men in all of Israel. He ALWAYS left them bested and speechless. I don't think someone who was uneducated and insane could have done that.
This is my opinion, and I don't know what you believe, but these are some things that I know with my heart.
The heart is purely a metaphor, just like how people draw big pink shapes as hearts.
But it was not back then- People actually thought that the heart had the brain's job. Or at the very least processes emotions. This was what these people thought was scientific truth, that the heart controls emotions. They were wrong, of course, the same as with kidneys controlling the concision.
Can you prove that your beliefs are the right ones?
Missed this one.
Atheism is the default position, we are not suggesting anything. The burden of proof lies on the accuser, the one putting forward a "hypothesis", being you. We can't prove there is no god- do to Christians changing were he is everything science improves, we can only prove that your "evidence" is false thus it is illogical to believe in him, the same as we can not disprove Zuese.
First off, would so many people put their trust in an insane man. Would a dying man put his complete faith, his life, in the hands of a madman?
Yes, they would. To prove this point, I'll go the other end of the spectrum. Remember a man named Adolf Hitler? That man, was completely insane. Yet an entire country put their faith in him. Put Germany as the dying man, and the situation did not change.
Not to compare Jesus with Hitler, but the scenario is very similar.
But, I must say: I do not think he was insane. He was probably a little wacky, but overall a pretty cool guy. Something tells me he didn't set off from Nazareth one day saying "I'm going to make everyone believe in me blindly!" No, he probably started preaching about peace, loving thy neighbor, the goods. When people listened to him, he probably thought he was onto something.
