His parents were wealthy and influential, they got him into the best school to be found and for a few years he trained quite well. He was intelligent and hardworking. His parents, originally Catholic, converted to Mormonism. Due to the hatred in Illinois towards The Latter Day Saints, they lost their fortune and became poor. This was a major change for Grey, who had up to this point had everything. So when Grey was about ten, they traveled west to Utah with the rest of the Latter Day Saint movement. During this process, his father died due to an accident on the trail and Grey was forced to take over his responsibilities. When they arrived in Salt Lake City, Grey and his family began to settle down at last. He was sent to work at a nearby coal mine to earn money. This was a miserable and dreary existence, but he was already tough enough to handle it and during this time he learned how to operate heavy machinery, work without much sleep, and work easily in the dark. When the mine collapsed, Grey was forced to take the mantle of leadership(at this point about fourteen) managed to hold together the people trapped and became a sort of quartermaster and leader, rationing out the supplies and organizing the effort to escape. Under his leadership, the trapped miners managed to dig their way out after a few months trapped underneath the surface. Grey returned to the world to find his mother had died as well. He stayed in Utah for a few years, working at the Olmstead Plant. During this time, he managed to earn back his family's lost fortune thanks to his prior high education. He moved south for a while, in Tennessee, and found himself disgusted by the slavery which he had not been exposed to before. He immediately moved, this time buying a mansion in New York. He became involved with the abolitionist John Brown, and funded his efforts. Thanks to the failure of Brown's attempt, Grey found himself in poverty once more, and moved back to Utah. He had just begun working at the Olmstead Plant once more, beginning to earn back his fortune with his intelligence, when he was drafted for the war.
