Too young to understand or remember any of this,he grew up accepting his father's Mistress as a mother, who more or less wasn't up to it and disliked Timofei. Receiving a full formal education by a private teacher ( with little to no pay not to mention), he developed an interest in weaponry of the times and managed to acquire a few for himself and disassemble them. After a round accidentally fired off while disassembling a PPsH-41, his father became VERY angry at him, finding his stash of guns which he had mastered their inner workings, and had Timofei shipped off to the Eastern Front to face the Nazi menace.

Technically, you're not supposed to know what he said but....
The SS soldier salutes you and allows you and your troops to return to the vehicle and proceed into the compound. You see several crates full of weaponry, and a locked door guarded by two standard German soldiers. The rest of the people in the compound are civilians, working to load the equipment from transport to transport, treating injured soldiers, etc. They could be German citizens drafted to the cause, or it's possible they're POWs or civilian prisoners from a country that the Nazis have already annexed.

The officers all seem to be quartered in the same building; a squat, drab, and quickly-constructed building made of cheap concrete. The doors to the officers' quarters are all guarded by standard German soldiers.
There is a small cache of vehicles(mostly tanks or jeeps) with full tanks of gas in the compound.
The ammunition and other weapons are delivered directly from another transport to the compound, then from the compound to the battlefield.
There is a tent in the center of the camp, that's likely used for planning. If they're not in the officers' quarters or surveying the troops, that's where the high ranking people would be.
The mess hall is a large tent in the corner of the compound. That's where all the enlisted men would be during lunch(the officers eat in their quarters), plus the civilians as well.
The enlisted soldiers have a large, cheap nylon tent peppered with holes in another corner of the compound; draped on it are several plastic tarps, probably put there in an attempt to block the snow or rain from entering. That is where the enlisted troops sleep.
And finally, the civilians and POWs are forced to just roll out tattered, filthy blankets or bedrolls if they have them, and sleep directly on the ground.
There are three patrols of three regular soldiers each on the perimeter.
