the wiki says that they do indeed incorporate folk tunes into their music. as the wiki is only someone's opinion it is up for debate... but the fact is... someone has said it... and u say its not... am i to believe your opinion over the wiki?
you asked for folk... its folk to someone... you said they're mostly german, scandanavian, etc.... and German they are.
The thread requested the name of a band. I posted the name of a band.
Now.... you might want to try Nightwish's "The Islander" and "The Last of the Wilds"... they're finnish and those two songs happen to be folkish.
@ sonata: wiki insn't always reliable, and simply a folish tune or anything doesn't mean the band or album, or even the song is considered Folk. I've listened enough to blind guardian that I know they aren't even slightly Folk.
PS: Dutch wiki calls it a power metal band, and the english one states this:
They are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres,[2] [3] Blind Guardian is a part of the German heavy metal scene that emerged in the mid-1980s.
Nevertheless, it's good that you call some band names, but please stick to true folk, viking or pirate bands. Or atleast in that direction.

I don't have enough time right now to check those out, but I did try out wolfchant, due to the fact you said it's pagan metal. I forgot to try it out after a friend called it earlier. It's a good folk metal subgenre. I'll check out the other 2 later.
I listened quite a bit to Alestorm, and I must frankly say that they are very good. I can't really tell if I like the genre of pirate metal because Alestorm seems to be one of the only group playing it, but the group itself is great. I particularly like the song Captain Morgan's Revenge, it has the probably most epic drum intro I've heard XD
And no, Blind Guardian is definitely not Folk. They're an awesome fantasy themed Power Metal group, at least as I personally see it.

Ha! they're not really the only ones. I also got swashbuckle, and wikipedia lists 2 more bands. It's a small group so far, but might just grow, eh? :P

Um.. I listened to one song of Swashbuckle, and honestly, it just sounded like dudes in pirate gear playing trash metal (I would have said 'horrible' trash metal but since I don't like trash I think every trash metal song sounds horrible to me). And wikipedia confirms my impression: it is Trash Metal. Maybe their lyrics contain piratic content, but purely musically speaking I don't count them to pirate metal.

Good god, it's THRASH metal. Not trash... THRASH.
And "irate metal" is not a legitimate genre. Lyrical themes do not make a band's genre.

Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source. Look for pirate metal and they will be listed. They are pirate metal, if you listen to their lyrics or look at their covers. Their music is much like thrash, I'll give you, but some songs are still pirate metal.

Actually, pirate metal is a legitimate genre. It's written on wikipedia, on my mp3 files, and there are more sites that confirm this.
