I was just wondering about the phenominon that on Halloween it is absolutly acceptable to go around to weird people's houses and ask for candy why wearing funky clothing, and yet if you did that on any other day you would be seen as the biggest creeper ever.

Also, if we do go around asking for candy, are we saying that strangers candy is more desireable then our own? That seems like we are for pedofiles and against buying our own candy.

typical "our own candy" is purchased with "our own money" and we don't like to use "our own money" to get "our own candy" so we get "our own candy" from strangers for free. as in with out use of "our own money"

Actually the tradition stems from the pagan holiday of Samhain, where they celebrated the harvest, and also the night when demons would walk the earth. The tradition of dressing up is to mimic the image of the demons, and the trick-or-treating was to entice people into sharing the bounty of their harvest under threat of malicious repercussions. Now, as we don't harvest, we use candy, and the costumes are varied and show many other cultural influences from the past.

But really, I like your observation about not using our money for candy, however look at the cost of the average costume, then look at the cost of candy. It would be more cost effective to not bother with the costume and trick-or-treating and buy your own candy. Not only that, but by purchasing your own candy you would get more that you get by trick-or-treating, and you would ensure that you only got candies that you like.

The only time I went trick or treating I was dressed up in a cheap ghost costume. I believe the candy I received without charge and the fun I had going around houses was better than just buying a whole stash of candy and eating it up in the solitude of my room.

That's all I can do now. No one goes trick or treating here.

Strangers have the best free candy. Remember kids, make sure a guardian/parent is watching over you.

while this is all true everyone still does it to avoid this:

"hey what did you dress up as for Halloween?"

"Psh i just bought a bunch of candy cause im too cheap for a costume"

"bet that was fun"

Of course it is, if you hit the rich neighbor hoods you get candy that's expensive. Expensive = good, or at least imported

Apparently the local patient first offers X-rays to check the candy for razor blades and such, no idea if it's true. However I do think it's safer to eat irradiated candy, than candy that might cut your mouth a little bit.

Exactly. So we don't trick-or-treat so we don't have to pay for candy, we do it because it's entertaining. Bottom line.
