I saw this on the news channel, so i thought it might fit here. Dogs, for many people, are just as much a part of the family to people as other humans in their lives. Its just as bad if not worse than anti-freeze... this post wasn't made to give anyone any bad ideas... Its news to me and I believe that it is worth making everyone aware of it. The problem lies in one of the artificial sweeteners used. It causes a massive sugar crash in dogs and their systems start failing... horrible way to die. The smaller the dog, the more vulnerable it is to the toxicity of that sweetener.

Well it seems like whenever I walk my dog I'm going to be searching the ground for any gum people may leave behind. I really hate people that just spit their gum anywhere they please.

well now i will seriously reconsider spitting my gum anywhere other than in a trashcan. the smaller the dog, the more damage it will do. I had a dog all of a sudden die of heart failure... and other system failure (actually he was dying and had to be put down)... we, as a family, don't chew gum that often... but.. i'll always wonder now

yes actually... in this regard, its similar to alcohol. typically the larger the person the more they will be able to consume and be able to process and remove from their system with a lesser effect. from what I remember those poor chihuhuas would be gone in 30 minutes or less. what a horrible way to die

The problem lies in one of the artificial sweeteners used.

The problem are sugar alcohols (the name is due to their resemblance to sugar and alcohol molecules), they raise blood sugar -a lot.
Actually, Carbohydrates (a class of polyols) are -often- worst than the real sugar.

its the same as chocolate and antifreeze... if you were going to do it then you were going to do it one way or another.

I'm not surprised it's not like the companies care or test if artificial sweeteners are potentially hazardous to animals.

Personally I hate artificial sweeteners because it could be worse than sugar and they shove it into everything, so it's impossible to avoid.
