People call certain Americans educated... but are they really? A lot of people say that Democrats are better because they're educated, and Republicans are more educated and so on and so on... but is anyone in America educated to the point of someone in, say, England?
but is anyone in America educated to the point of someone in, say, England?
On average I certainly wouldn't be surprised if the English are better educated, because, for all its flaws, the UK school system is better than America's. In addition 50% of English people now go to university. I don't know the figure for America, but I am certain it i smuch lower than that because many simply can't afford it. So in terms of higher education the English are ahead. Also, as I've been informed by some half American friends of mine, they found English school far more difficult that American school. Apparently you don't start working hard until you are much older in America than you do in England, and that the first year of university in America is like the last year of 6th form (the English 'high school' I think).
Certainly though education standards are always likely to be higher in Europe, or indeed any other industrialised nations which lean more towards a secular, socialist sense of community, and thus decent state funded education system, than an American one where the education standards often depend on how much you pay, or the affluence of the area you go to school in.
I've got to agree with you Firefly. You're more likely to see an more educated populous in a country where equal opportunities are better funded and enacted by the government.
Before people start freaking out about equal opportunities and how education should be a privilege, etc, keep this in mind:
A very large majority of high schools in the United States are publicly funded. That being said, those who attend these public schools who seek to advance their education at universities should have equal opportunities across the board. This is largely not the case, because as Firefly points out, education standards depend on the affluence of the are you go to school in.
