I think that when you have an unread message in your profile, a little letter should appear by your profile name, so you can tell if someone sends you a message
Something very similar to this will be implemented with the private messaging system on AG3. For now, though, there is no sense in the developers taking the time to implement a new system on the current incarnation of AG while AG3 is so close to release.
