n a major victory for gay rights advocates as well as President Obama, the Senate today voted to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy banning gay men and women from serving openly in the military
So, what're your views on the repeal of DADT? is it a good thing and progressive for the USA? or will it only prove harmful to America and it's troops? Please back up your points if you have any particularly strong ones to make.
I personally am overjoyed and I see no long-term detrimental effects. A few dedicated homophones might not like it but looking at other countries which allow openly gay military service - it's a major step forward that has no real downsides.
I think it's good i terms of quality, but I wonder how they'll implement it... that's going to be e real question I think.. overal though. Definitely a good thing
Hey look who decided to join the 21st Century! Good on you America. Now let's just move along to making it legal is all states. The Canadians shall wait patiently. Until we send our gay population in angry rainbowy hoardes.
Seriously though I'm really glad this happened. Maybe this will help the Americans progress a little more quickly in terms of social liberty.
It doesn't matter. Human rights aren't usually big in the military, and you sexuality doesn't really matter. When/if I go into the military, I'll be sure to remain in a DADT policy, simply because I don't want to know, so I won't ask, you won't tell. End of story. I really don't need to know if your boyfriend broke up with you, or if there's the special someone you're looking at. Trust me when I say: I don't want to know. Shut up, leave me alone.
The same should apply to heterosexual relationships as well, in my opinion.
For either case, it should be left up to the commanding officers of the unit/company/etc. to determine it, not necessarily a law. Laws in this instance are pointless, and do no good and all harm. They tend to get good soldiers in sh*t with the law for no real reason.
I am happy that this action will allow people that want to serve in the armed forces to do so but I hope that this will not cause problems for the troops. What most people don't realize is that when someone joins the military the US government basically owns them until they are out. When on duty, troops have no say on what they can wear, when they can eat etc.

Politicians tend to interfere in the military too much, no matter what country you are in(Unless, of course, the military is the government). Career politicians usually have no experiance in the armed forces and I think they should leave the military alone. They usually cause more harm then good.
