I would say he shouldn't be because Donkey Kong has a variety of characters and started with his own series. but then somehow merged with mario and started showing up in Mario spin-off series like Mario Tennis.

"Donkey Kong" was the first game that Mario ever appeared in (but he wasnt known as Mario). Then Mario got his own game"Super Mario Bros." So in a way, Donkey Kong started Mario.

tangramfool is right.my grandfather had the arcade with that game. it was a donkey kong game and marios name was actually jumpman.

The new donkey kong game is pretty awesome.
